Another problem with my MkI Freelander (2006) relates to the new clutch, ***** cylinder and dual mass flywheel that has just been fitted.

Don't feel the new set up is right. There is way too much free play in the clutch pedal (about halfway before anything happens) and changing gears a bit clunky at times as if gears not fully dis-engaging fully. Have had a few 'cabbagey' smells arise when driving (burning clutch?).

Asked the garage to check it but they are saying it is ok. They have said they could change the master cylinder which MAY reduce the free play in the clutch pedal.

Feel they are avoiding an issue but I haven't enough knowledge to back this up. Can anyone advise please?

Was the shop you used a Rover certified shop, did they use Rover parts only and how many miles were on the old clutch?
Did you use a credit card to pay for the new clutch? If you did, and the installing shop won't inspect and repair your clutch to it's original tolerances, I would suggest you PM me your number and I'll walk you thru how to encourage that shop to make it right or have the credit card company reverse their payment until all is made right.

Hi Disco Mike,

It wasn't a certified Rover shop and the parts were, I imagine, not Rover parts (though I do not know this for sure). I had an alternative quote from a Rover specialist and he was going to use top quality parts but the cost was several hundred pounds more.

I paid using a debit card.

I haven't pursued this further yet as the car is going back for it's MOT re-test on Tuesday (he is going to fit a new button on the dash for the faulty horm). Wanted to get some further info first.

Well, the old saying of you get what you pay for runs true.
Not sure of how to help you at this point.
Let us know how this turns out.

And there is no such thing as a free lunch!

Although significantly cheaper it was still a huge outlay - pretty much what the car is worth I think. I spoke to the mechanic this morning when I dropped off the car for the horn issue. He listened and said he'd take it for a drive, plus he'd try bleeding the master cylinder (not sure if he did this originally). He has also said he'd guarantee his labour for two years.

The issue does seem to have improved a bit since the new clutch system was fitted. It was almost undriveable initially.

Not sure about the 'boiled cabbage' smell that appears every now and again now.

I'll let you know what the outcome is.

Sounds like you may have a clutch leak, better crawl under and look.
