My mate has locked his keys in his old 2000 RR at his house in the mountains. He has been quoted $$$$ to get someone out to unlock it or $$$$ to give the VIN to the dealer and get a new key..does anyone know a quick way to get into one of these old timers?

You will be forced to get a key sent from the dealer or do some damage.

1. Given that the keys are in the vehicle, you are at risk of having someone smash a window to get in. Insurance would cover the broken glass if they did not notice the keys and took your CDs and iPod.

2. The rear quarter glass is relatively easy to remove. Be careful, but it really just pops out. Start from the narrowest corner and work the seal from in front to behind using nylon/plastic wedges and vaseline.

3. You can try to remove the window trim on the outside of the drivers door, starting by simply lifting it gently at the mirror side. Then work back. There is a screw retaining it at the end above the door handle. Pulling the trim off will break the plastic mount since the screw head is accessed from the inside. With the trim off, you can look down from above and try to lift the lock pawl on the far side of the actuator. It doesn't take a lot of force to lift the verticle rod with a plastic anchor to the mechanism.

Hope this helps. I find process number 2 easiest with patience and finesse.

Process 2. is the only way in if the vehicle is superlocked.

Problem solved itself - the snow thawed and he found the key sitting next to the car on the ground!?! It wasn't actually in the car at all.

Thanks for the advice anyway, appreciated
