Hi
Basic question - could anyone tell us where to check and fill gearbox oil level on a freelander petrol 1.8 - yr2000. presuming this is the problem as it is getting dangerous when we can't get 1st or 2nd after running about 20mls. (embarrassing in a queue of trffic when you can't set off!) - unless anyone can point to another cause?

hi carol
its a very common problem in freelander. which is caused by master or ***** clutch cylinder. i had it before.if its still driveable then change them asap. otherwise u will b stuck middle of the road. its 2000 model so master and ***** cylinder comes in whole unit.it will cost u 60 pounds for the whole lot(from ebay).its just plug and roll soo dont worry its not a big job.best of luck

Your first question, standing in front of the vehicle facing the motor, towards your right side, near the drive shaft. Better angle of sight would be to remove the left front wheel, when on safety jacks, follow with your hand on the drive shaft towards the tranny, just about 2 to 3 inches up from there is the filler plug the tranny. remove that and stick your finger into the hole. (lol engine off obviously), Now bend your finger downwards about an inch. If you don't see oil on your finger, then either 1 ; top up with tranny ep 90 oil, or 2; drain tranny oil and here you top up until it over flows. Basic thought on your 1st question. However, There could be other reasons why your stick don't move in or out. If there is no odd noises coming from the tranny, then yes have your master and ***** cylinder checked, but also keep in mind that the bar from your stick to the tranny may corrode at the joints eventually. Meaning, there where any movable connections are between two items or objects, you will find either a plastic type bearing or some sort off engagement type item. They may be worn out. (a good indication to this is the travel distance inside of from neutral to any selected gear number), what I mean is when still new the gear lever inside the cab will travel a short distance into the selected gear position. As time goes on this travel distance may be longer. Another point to look out for is the Teflon bush the gear selector shaft at the gear box may expand due to heat of gearbox after even 20 min drive as well. Other than that you may find your tranny is on the way out and may either need a major overhaul or exchange. If you do want to exchange, I recommend to dig deep and purchase a new box. Hope this helps...

My friend is finding similar trouble with his 2004 petrol.
Has been struggling to get in gear without jumping right down on the clutch pedal.
Though only today it's changing like silk. The only difference noticed is that it had been parked on an incline nose down.
A ***** and master was bought yesterday, would it be worth him checking gearbox oil levels before paying for the cylinder change??
Thanks
