Any help or advice would appreciated, Problem started with engine turning over but refusing to start. On checking vehicle engine oil was found to be low which in its self is unusual as oil is regularily checked and does not use any. topped oil up and left overnight. On checking next morning started immediately and ran normally. Within a few days engine block warning light started flashing along with an intermittant loss of power and once again engine oil found to be low. there are no signs of leaking oil, This is on a 2003 Freelander td4 Diesel. Any advice gratefully received, Thankyou

well I don't drive a diesel, but what I have learned through other makes and models is, when that happens what you are experiencing, then its time to overhaul entire motor. The problem lies with the piston oil rings. its a common problem. But it can swing to other area's as well. The valve stem seals may leak and oil burns through on the piston. What you mentioned sounds more in that line. And the give away hint here where you mentioned "Problem started with engine turning over but refusing to start", sounds like not just the oil rings but also all the other rings as well. Loss of power is another hint. compression test the motor you will find that the compression rings are shot too. Ouch this is gonna get nasty with a price tag.
