Any chance you have mice? They are known to chew into the pipe/insulation exiting the tank top.

Oddly, I had this happen while offroad two weeks ago on a tough trail with a full tank. Somehow gas was able to slosh/reverberate up the fill tube. Went away after getting off the trail but stunk up the interior and was pretty noticeable.
