thanks for the info! Is the rack so high up because it's mounted on the crossbars instead of directly to the truck?

Yes, the rack sits a little higher than it would if mounted directly to the truck. I want to be able to use it on other vehicles, and if I purchased the rack designed to fit directly on the LR4 that would not be possible.

I love the Baja Rack and I have had 2 other types of racks on my LR4s. Also, since I have the black design package from the factory I had the full-length black roof rails. Baja did tell me I could not install without removing the racks, but I did it quite easily by just removing the front foots to the rack and pulled them out, no problem at all!

I too have the long rails and the manufacturer said it will work, but I can't figure out how to make the rack and the rails share the front mounting hole. Can you be more explicit on how you dealt with this? Any guidance appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Hello Chris,

Sorry for the delay, I do not check this thread too much since I got rid of my LR4. You will need to remove the front foots from the stock full-length roof rail. If you loosen it from the rail and where it goes into the roof, it will slide off. Now, there is still a rail there without the footing, so it looks kind of weird, but you really can't see it well behind the Baja Rack. I hope that helps!

Regards, David

Added a cargo net to my Baja standard full-sized roof rack. Really happy with how it turned out. Kind of a dream of mine to throw stuff up on top under a cargo net. My next move is to buy some Army/Navy surplus sea bags and stuff those with gear to toss on top. Getting ready for a long weekend to Coeur D'Alene, ID, so I'm outfitting the rig in preparation.

Here it is with luggage on top. By the way, the net was $25 and it fits perfectly. (Wally World).

Headed out to Coeur D'Alene soon. Driving at night. It will be cooler and less traffic. Wish me luck. Will report back on how it went.

400 miles today. Didn't push it. 65 mph and lots of rest breaks. A/C on the entire time. Got passed a lot. Okay with that. Didn't want to be like the poor old guy I parked next to at the rest stop that dropped his transfer case.

Return trip was pretty much the same. Made it round trip without a breakdown or anything out of the ordinary. Probably put about 900 miles on it over the last 3 days. Looks pretty cool. Like the way it's outfitted. Just don't trust it mechanically and not willing to press my luck on a long road trip away from home.

Picture one below is a rest break I took the first day at the Hyak Ski Resort on Snoqualmie Pass. Two and three are pictures from the viewing area overlooking the Columbia River at Vantage on the way back home today.

The hotel we stayed at in Post Falls, Idaho, is on the river and a lot of first worlders like to come and play with their toys there. Parking lot full of nice 4x4 rigs. There was also a small group of Indian motorcycle enthusiasts (newer, fully decked out, models). They were running with a BMW cycle (also newer and fully decked out). Overheard them talking about their adventures on the deck that evening and a guy outside their group that had his own bike joked about the BMW saying, "Well, you need to make sure you have at least one reliable bike on the ride!" They all laughed and it reminded me of some of the stuff we talk about here.
