For those interested in off roading in the Western NC/NWestern SC area, I found the Jim Timmerman Natural Resources Area at Jocassee Gorges. It is about 20-30 minutes north of Clemson (were I was visiting my middle son). A couple of links describing it and map:

Duke Power maintains the roads and trails. We went on SC 11 and found the gate closed, it is opened from 9/14 to mid January, then again in the Spring. However we drove to Horse Pasture Road, a narrow and very cool pseudo gravel 4 miler, with great dropoffs and tight turns. I would say any entry level offroader can do this, and there are hiking trails off the road. This is the green marked road on the top of the map. At the end of that road, there are more gated (yellow marked roads) seasonal roads, one was open and we drove down a bit, challenging but easy to do for the LR4. These are dirt and undulating trails, narrow, but very passable.

To get a large detail map, the pdf map on the link above but 2ft by 3ft print, you can go to the Holly Springs Country Store (google map it) on corner of 178 and SC 11. You can get provisions and gas there too, and map is free just need to ask at counter.

Will come back after all gates open and go for the long drives, hike to the waterfalls, we did the some of those and they are worth it.
There is primitive camping accessible by either foot or your LR4 in some of the mountain ridges, camping is open year round, but roads only during the season I mentioned above.

Anyone interested in doing this, let me know, I will go back in the fall, will be cooler and dryer too. Distance was about 2.5 hours (148 miles) from SE Charlotte.

Your description sounds great. I wish I had known about this when I was solo roadtripping home to Maryland after getting my daughter moved into her new apt in Auburn, AL. I drove somewhat close to this on 85 on my way home and spent the night in Tryon, NC.

Maryland is absolutely awful for public offroad trails; always closing them down or severely limiting access. I have been scouting nearby WV for some options but will keep this one in mind next time I head that way, thanks.

Found something for you. I just joined this forum, expeditionportal.com, the forum is :
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/index.php

I signed up for the Overland Expo East in October 4-6 in Asheville, as I am new to this whole off-roading thing and want to learn from the experienced folks. Overlanding is another term I learned used for people doing off-road, more of what I was looking for as I am not into rock climbing with the wife's "station wagon".

They are outfitting an LR4 for trips, I like how they are going about it step by step and exploring results, etc. Looks impressive, this would be my dream rig:

And found this info about a group doing "overlanding" in WV.

Yes you'll find ExPo very interesting if you're new to the whole thing.
I'm fairly new myself and to be honest it's not all that difficult as long as you use common sense and maybe a little bit of logic and reasoning ;)

Bond,
Funny you posted this, I was there yesterday to explore. I drove my Land Cruiser though, took the dogs and knew they would get wet and muddy so a 20 year old truck is better than the rover. Pretty cool place
