Can you stop by an auto parts place and read the codes with an ODBII scanner? (they usually let you borrow it and read the codes).

Typically the answer is yes, as long as you are not hearing some nasty sound from the drivetrain. You don't want to make something worse.

Do light mean different things on different models?

Thanks for the heads up...

I has recently read a thread that said on Rovers to absolutely NOT drive when Service light is on....and it was okay to drive with Check Engine light...I thought it was the opposite..

I am not hearing any odd noises and it is not over heating...my mechanic is about an hour drive away...

If the Service light comes on my Rover, is it safe to drive as well?

Oh, service light... i might have been thinking of the check engine light.

I guess I don't know that model well enough to give solid advice, so hopefully someone else will chime in.
