I ran out of gas in my 2000 land Rover discovery, put gas in it and it wouldn't start. I bought a new fuel pump put it in and it starts , sputters and dies. What is wrong with it.

Was there any garbage in the fuel tank when you changed it? The only filter is on the pick up tube in the tank at the fuel pump did you clean/change it?

Yes cleaned it out, it starts but only stays on for a minute, it is back firing under the hood while I have my foot on the gas pedal. As soon as I let off the gas pedal it sputters and dies.

Check the fuel pressure at the rail, I would also look at the Crank Position Sensor, it can cause similar weird running issues.

Is it petrol or diesel?

More than likely it is Petrol as we sadly don't have the 2000 MY Discovery with a Diesel here in the States.
