2011 LR4 5.0 - Getting the Timing Chain Guides replaced under CPO this week.

I have heard and read of stories about issues after this work being done - vibration post work, engine not the same etc. Not sure if all are true or not, but is there anything that I should do in preparation? I know this job if not done correctly could create other issues.

I was going to take a video of the engine running and the truck running prior to drop off.

Anything else I should do....

Thanks
Shane

Thank-goodness for the CPO Warranty!

What is it doing that requires you to have that done? Making some noise?

I'm curious too. The CPO warranty on the 2011 that I recently bought expires next month. Wondering if there's something that I should be looking for.

I just had those replaced on my 2012 under CPO warranty.
They kept the truck for a month as they only have one master tech specialized in this type of work.
I dropped off the truck and decided to not bother them about it as I didn't want them to botch the work (as they usually do).
So far so good.

Interesting. I imagine this would be a huge expense out of pocket. Can you guys provide input on mileage and symptoms that led to the work?

I had this work done on my wife's previous Mini Cooper S (2007) but that is a well-known issue. Plastic chain guide will crack. Lucky for us it was fairly benign in its manifestation. A few unlucky ones had a catastrophic engine failure. Most people heard ticking. I didn't, but one day I just could stick the dipstick in. It went through a cavity on the chain guide and the cracked guide blocked the hole.

Also, I thought I read on this forum that the guides may have been updated at some point? Late 2012 maybe?

Mileage 51k. Engine light on. Fault code P0018 (crankshaft). No real symptoms. No sound to be heard. Clicking was coming from fan.
Job was just under $6k but included the air compressor as well. So probably $4.5/$5k for engine work. You do get a free oil change with this ;)

Hi All,

2011 LR4 - 129KM so 80K miles.

Dropped the LR4 yesterday. The 5.0 engine is know for having this issue and it is covered by warranty and CPO. I had my diff and transfer fluids changed at a independent shop and they mentioned the noise. I didn't have any codes yet or other. I am sure the shop was looking to do the work, but once I said I had the CPO they said to take it to the LR dealer and tell them you hear a noise that is odd - clacking/ticking etc.

So I dropped off to have it checked and said that and it could be a water pump or timing chain guides... but something is off. LR deal agreed and ordered parts and said... yes it'a common job and is always covered.

They said... it will be 2-3 days of work... Will update when I get it returned. Told them no rush... as want the job done right. In a Discovery Sport loaner.. (miss the LR4)

They did suggest I need to do the Control Arms... but that's not covered by warranty.

Hello All,

I picked up the LR4 yesterday and so far it seems great. The engine sounds so much smoother.

The only issue I have currently is that the front parking sensor seems to be not responding correctly. I have cleaned it off, but will go through car wash to test again.. It beeps when nothing is in front at all.

not a big deal, but would like to make sure its not a bigger problem beyond the sensor.

any ideas?

Shane

Has anyone heard how difficult this job truly is? I don't have CPO on MY2011 with 75k everything seems fine now but eventually I'd like to swap out the chain/tensioner/guides. Tool/ Kits are out there for about $150. I've done other vehicles in the past. I'm aware the consequences of done incorrectly. I guess I have trust issues giving my car to mechanics and the expense.
