This likely won't be interesting to anybody but me. The lighting isn't even good... BUT, I was parking yesterday, saw a new Discovery, and had to park next to it to take some comparison pictures.

I have to say, I still like the LR4 more, but I do think if they just kept with the same basic body but maybe rounded off that top rear corner of the LR4 they would have not alienated so many of us! But I'm preaching to the choir, here.

In any case, side by side pics below. I'm at normal height. Was surprised how much taller the LR4 is.

I have to say, the new Discovery wasn't even attention grabbing in the lot. Very plain looking car. You see an X5 or a Q7 and it stands out. I would have passed right by this had I not known what it was, and even so I had to double check to make sure it wasn't a Disco Sport. I'm sure folks will find ways to toughen these up a bit with nice racks, sliders and such, but this stock one was quite bland looking.

Loading / carrying a canoe looks problematic or at least cumbersome with the D5. My LR4 with low profile roof rack works very well for this role/task.

The D5's butt is really ugly. Also don't like the loss of rear/side visibility.

I sense a D6 is already on the drawing board.

Thank you for posting those comparison pics. They say it all! The Discovery is very boring to my eyes at least.

Thanks for posting those photos.
So,...we have two cars next to each other. LR4 which design is almost identical to LR3 which hit US market in 2005. Yes 12 years old design and still looking fresh , better functionality and utility, build like a tank. LR3 and LR4 both bring attention because there is nothing similar on the road. ( except MB G class).
This is just an appearance. To me more important is how functional the car is. How much useful room I have inside.
I use LR4 off road and to me it is the best all in one vehicle ( family trips, off roading, moving 7 adults arround, driving to a restaurant etc).
I looked at D5 recently when I took my LR4 to the dealer for some service.
Do not get me wrong guys. D5 is a very nice car but nothing like LR4. Not even close.
D5 looks like a cross over, also D5 looks like Discovery Sport , just bigger.
D5 and Disco Sport were seating next to each other on the showroom floor. The only reason I could tell which was which was the size. Otherwise on the road I can not tell the difference.
D5 just blends with other SUVs on the road. I had Disco Sport as a loaner some few months ago and I liked it. It is a nice replacement of Freelander or LR2.
Discovery 5 ...... Not really.

I hope that with sales up in the sky , land rover will afford to build a Defender which will have something in common with land rover heritage.

We had a loaner Disco Sport while the wife's LR4 was getting serviced. Not too impressed. That D5 looks like it's big brother. Showed the wife the pics and she said, "ohhh that's horrible"! 20160804_152957.jpg
