I thought I'd introduce Zara to the forum!

I've had her for 3 years and she's at 160,000miles. I bought her stock and mods include: hidden winch and 12,000lb T-Maxx; FR rack; high line curved LED bar, side and rear LED work lamps, front spots, LED mod kit, and HID high beam lights; rear ladder; ham radio; snorkel; gen. rubber mat set and carpet mat set; Exmoor Trim canvas seat covers; Bonnet anti-glare sticker; and FR storage solutions -- next week I am moving to the 20" XXV RRS rims in satin black.

Up to now, repairs and preventative maintenance include: 6 O2 sensors -- 2 front, 4 rear; 4 AC compressors, AC condenser and dryer; 2 MAF sensors; 4 water pumps; front pulleys ad belt; thermostat housing and thermostat; temp sensor; injectors; 3 fuel pumps; 4 air springs; two EAS compressors; fuel level sensors; purge valve pump, sensor, and canister; front wheel bearings; front and rear EAS valves; heater matrix; rear drive shaft; transmission fluid and filter change; brakes; and rear parking sensor loom. All parts fitted are genuine Land Rover parts.

I am currently trying to decide whether or not to go with 255/55/20s or 275/55/20s -- I am probably going with Duratrac. Though I have been disappointed with them in the past, there's nothing better out there from what I can tell (I dislike the KO2 tread pattern immensely). I wish Goodrich would bring back the Trac Edge!

Border Collie or Aussie? I am not familiar with the kind of winch you have. When I bought my LR3 HSE used the dealer recommended the Warn 9500+. What about the rope or wire on your winch - wire or synthetic rope? And is that a custom fitted bumper? How much do you drive your LR3 or is it only for recreation so the added weight of a permanently attached winch isn't a big deal?

Hi Whaydahdvr, Jyp is a border collie. They are smaller, quicker, and longer lived than their cousin the Aussie or blue healer. Nevertheless, they are all great dogs and (I think) related way back when. Jyp is a rescue dog and has been a great friend and companion!

Warn are meant to be the final word in winches -- but they are over priced. I am certain that they are worthy of their reputation, though. I have had multiple T-Maxxes and they have been outstanding products. The 12,000lb is fully able to perform at that rate and probably above; I have never had one stall out on me. I have only owned an 8,000 Warn, and that was, as you might expect, underpowere (it also didn't like power feeding out, for some reason)! I have gone with the synthetic rope. I have snapped the rope once, but you can braid them back together on sight and it didn't (hasn't) broken again. The T-Maxx is usually 1/2 the price of the equivalent Warn.

Nope, the bumper is stock and the winch cradle is fitted behind the bumper. It is a bit of an annoying fit as the bumper has to come off and its a fairly large strip down job. Moreover, the control box for the winch has to be mounted elsewhere (mine is mounted to the plastic wheel arch liner on the passenger side), as there is no room to put the control box on the top of the winch itself (which is where it usually fits). This requires that the control box cables are extended -- so some re-wiring is necessary.

The LR3 is my daily driver and she has all the stuff on the roof rack pretty much throughout the summer. I have put on 90,000 miles in just over 3 years -- I have done nearly 40,000 since last summer. The weight of the winch is not really much of an issue; the rack and extras are more of a concern -- my toolbox weighs more than the winch (though I did chose the synthetic rope to help with the weight of the winch). I carry a water container on the roof as well as fuel. These carry water for the dog and fuel for whatever; they weigh 90lbs -- probably getting up for twice what the winch weighs. I am moving over to 20" rims next week, and so load rating is a concern for me. I have elected for 950kg Land Rover rims. I have not actually weighed her fully loaded, but I am guessing that she will be up near 6600lbs -- perhaps 7300 with people and camping gear loaded.


I mostly take everything off the roof in the winter as the water freezes and the Kayaks are not really needed. This lightens things up a bit and means I can sit her in the garage in the -40c freezes we get. I occasionally have more fuel storage on the roof though, for when I do a lot of trail work or head up North to the Mackenzie River (fuel stations are very few and far between up there).

I was admiring the bumper and winch set up. I've been debating about getting a winch for years, since I bought my LR3 used in 2008. I really like the set up you have there and now that my LR3 isn't my commuting vehicle I'm thinking of following your lead. Commuting through Boston, MA traffic I wasn't inclined to get it set up for that - and the high cost of a Warn.
I'll look for a T Max 12000. I also bought 18" rims when I got my LR3 and have debated about getting more off-road tires for those trips. When I was commuting it wasn't a priority or something I wanted to do but now I may look into another set of tires.
