+1 on the HD package - should be mandatory. Also gives you full-size spare tire which is rare these days; good to have for mitigating travel/vacation interruptions and lets you spread the wear over 5 tires to effectively extend your purchasing interval.

As for tires, I have the Goodyear Duratracs in 255/55R19 installed on my factory wheels with about 25k miles and am very happy with them. It depends on your use; I wanted to have one tire for all-weather/snow with off-road capability and they have worked very well for me and my driving style.

It depends on your usage, terrain, and budget. For an 18" wheel setup I know several on this forum use and like the the Compomotives and there is a steel alternative as well.

I would say 2 speed transfer case is a must, but HD not necessarily a huge improvement. If available go for it. The full size spare is nice but easily and cheaply added. I have 4 full size spares off CL for $150. The locking rear diff sounds good but I have never seen one of my tires spin by itself. The brake will hold the loose tire I have dug 4 holes before. If you do a lot of off roading I'm sure locking would help. But I've never had a problem on slimmy boat ramps or moderate off roading.

I think on 2014 and newer the HD package includes the 2-speed transfer case, rear locker and full size spare. Rear locker was not a separate option on 2014 and newer.

True. I purchased a 2014 - and had to order it with the HD package to get 2-speed xfer case and the full size spare was included.

SCV6 guy here...

I've owned the 14' and now have a 15'. The 14' ended up blowing an oil intercooler and I lemoned it. The 15' has been outstanding. I special ordered the LUX model with the HD package on both. I've never driven a 13' or later so I cannot compare motors, but having driven plenty of other V8's in my time, I must say that the SCV6 does a fantastic job pulling the 5500 lb+ curb weight around. I've installed the 18 Compos and went with the BFG T/A KO 265 65 18's. (Link is a must read if you decide to upgrade tire combos.) Even with that much rubber going round in circles the SCV6 is just fine in my opinion. The 8 speed tranny is fun to run through the gears, its definitely a different feel. It jumps onto to freeways around town with plenty of power. Don't let those V8 guys tell you any different. :aetsch: Lets face it, its a 5500 vehicle, I doubt any of us are pulling 13's in the quarter mile! :boxing:

The handful of small details / options that have changed from 14' to 16' are negligible with the side step being the most obvious cosmetically, I took them off. I would have opted for the adaptive cruise control as that was a new option in 15', although I passed on it.

If you're not off roading much then the HD package or a V8 may not be necessary. The HD package may prove difficult to find anyhow. I recently took mine to the back country in the Eastern Sierra along with others who were driving heavily modified Jeeps, some on 37's. Over the radio I heard them say they're putting their rigs into 4 wheel low, I was plugging away in high gear and it wasn't breaking a sweat, granted we were scaling large boulders. It did great.

Good luck!

It is actually closer to 6500 if you outfit it for a trip and have some aftermarket...

This is before my ARB Bumper and winch, and without all my camp gear loaded. Go visit a CAT scale sometime. I was 6200 with just sliders and a rack and an empty truck. I bet stock they are 6000lbs.

I ran a 2005 LR3 with 4.4 V8 for 250,000 miles and then moved to a 2014 LR4 with the supercharged V6. I'm now at 77K miles on it. If that is the move you're considering, you'll miss very little. In fact, I like the SCV6 setup more. I did order mine with the HD package to get the two-speed box which I used often off-road on the LR3 and couldn't imagine not having on my new LR4. The only real downside I've experienced is the start/stop system. They call it "intelligent" but mine regularly frustrated me and was subsequently disabled. Good luck to you.

I've gone from the 5.0L V8 to the 3.0L SC. I hate the rough idle the V6 has (it's not silky like the V8), but besides that, it's ok... I much prefer the V8, but if you don't drive fast, you probably won't miss much. I've ordered a VelocityAP tune for my 3.0L V6 and hope it delivers on the claimed gains. The Jaguar guys with it say it's good, but I'm not sure how much it will add to a 6000lb tank like the LR4.
