Happy Saturday!

We currently own a 2012 FFRR and absolutely love it. We purchased it a year ago as it was a fantastic deal, but my wife really wanted an LR4.

So, I have started looking for my next vehicle (won’t be buying until the end of the year at the earliest) and really want to get an LR4. Specifically model years 14-16. When browsing Autotrader and other sights I can’t find any differences between HSE and HSE Lux models. I know it made a huge difference in options on the 2012 FFRR, so surely these are just mislabeled? If anyone can direct me to where I can find the options that were available for those years that would be fantastic!

Also, I love the 5.0L V8 in the FFRR and thankfully haven’t had timing chain guide issues yet. I’ve read up on the threads here about keeping the oil changed every 5k miles instead of 10k and am hopeful that we won’t experience any failure in the near future. Are there any drivability differences in the V8 vs V6 supercharged in the LR4? Definitely open to either engine, just want something with similar power to the 5.0 and equally reliable (I know the timing chain guide problem was corrected for ‘13 MY)

Thanks in advance!

The HSE in NA is basically the standard trim. The Lux gets upgrades like driver memory seat, upgrade stereo, nicer leather, i think rear climate, heated steering & seats is included in lux too. Other packages are vision (lighting & cameras), entertainment (headrest lcds), HD (rear locker & low range gear), towing, black pkg (trim)

Good info here:

Personally, I hunted and found a low miles '13 with the V8. Fuel use is more to be sure, but the V8 power is perfect for this truck. Towing is great. By MY'13, most issues with the V8 had been sorted and common issues like the waterpump were covered under warranty. I didn't feel as optimistic about a newer less proven v6 set up. Also prefer NA vs compressor for my use, some offroad.

There are a couple minor style changes from 13/14. One was the black rear tail lights. They are a direct swap and appear only slightly different. The shifter knob went from a 8" traditional shifter to a 2" wheel knob. 13s all have low range trans, 14+ only low on a HD pkg.

Are you hoping to find a HD or will a non HD truck work for you?

Thanks for the fantastic information! I don’t normally tow, but I’ve made the mistake before of not getting the tow package because I thought I’d never use it. It probably wouldn’t be a dealbreaker if I found a vehicle with every other option, but the low gear feature does seem crucial for these vehicles...

The package options are very similar to what was available on the ‘12 FFRR, and I would want to maintain a similar feel. The vision and lux packages would be a must have, and our FF has the HD package too.

I know what you mean about a NA V8. The power is felt all the time. They didn’t make any supercharged V8’s in LR4’s? Without a doubt once the timing chain guide’s were taken care of, this engine is a joy.

Unfortunately no SC V8s and worst of all, no diesel in NA.

My experience was that virtually none of the sales people had a clue about the packages. VINs seem to be hit or miss when identifying packages and are oddly hard to lookup. Visual clues were invaluable to figuring out what truck has which packages by looking at a few photos online. Prices didn't seem to be effected much by specific packages, just the typical mileage, location, and 'level' (hse/lux) variables. Most places couldn't tell a LR4 from a LR3, much less verifying if a truck has HD. (Ask how i know...) I took a "get ur $$ worth" approach and eventually found a fully loaded and then some CPO option from a big LR dealer across the country. Lots of hassle and research, but worth it in the end.

The 'tow package' is pretty easily added after. You'd need a IID tool, but as a LR guy, you probably already have one. That, plus a $100 in parts and 30 minutes, you have tow package. You cannot practically add HD (or vision & lux for that matter) afterwards and thus it's a fairly valued package. In the '13 you get the locking rear diff on top of the standard hi/lo gearbox, the '14+ only gets hi/low gears (and rear locker) with the HD package. Hard to find, tricky to identify remotely, but will likely impact resale value and should be considered.

If you're planning to keep it long term like me, easy DIY maintenance was also important. Not sure about the '14+, but the V8 oil change is a breeze. Easiest and cleanest oil change I've experienced. Brakes were easy DIY too. I'm looking forward to many years with this truck. Absolutely love it.

I just bought a 13 recently and am happy that I didn’t go with the 14 or the 12. It’s a beast and pretty much has everything as noted by the_just and can be made to be everything you want if you toy around with it. I got lucky finding one with 25k miles but ask your local dealer(s) to watch for one for you. The 13 is the last of the V8s and also fixed up from all the 10-12 issues.

over there
I just bought a 13 as well for the same reasons. A bunch more miles but I am only going to put about 5k miles a year on it.

Thank you all for the information. Again, it looks like listings had no idea what options were on vehicles because I had seen 14+ vehicles with the 5.0 V8.

From reading here the supercharged V6 seems to have been dependable too. Just curious about the difference in maintenance between the two as I’ve never owned a supercharged vehicle.

Topix is a fantastic resource for LR owners!

Are the infotainment systems different between 13/14-16?
