hello all- love the forum and it has been most helpful! hopeful that someone can help me out. i have an '01 disco w/ 110k miles- regularly serviced-- i live in tampa, fl and it has been cold the past few weeks (for florida anyway). Every time i try to start my truck when its VERY cold in the AM, it will not turn- it sounds like it is cranking nicely, but will not turn over--had battery/alt checked and is fine--baterry only 2 mos old--
had to have it towed to my mechanic and he replaced 3 out of 4 O2 sensors (one was on back order, but coming this week) it has been starting just fine until our latest cold front... (35F low) could this last new O2 sensor seriously be the culprit and if so, why has it started w/o 4th new O2 sensor on warm mornings? thanks for any help!!!

If you mean it turns over but doesn't start, then replace the Crank Position Sensor.

when it starts to go bad, it is just sensitive period... may work one day not the next... cold/rain... cloudy sky.... it isn't very forgiving till it fails completely and it will not start.

thanks pal- have been reading up on some of your other posts--great stuff! i'll check my rave about installing crank sensor- is this something that O'reilly/Advance/Autozone, etc may carry? pretty easy DIY? i'd love to NOT bring it to my mechanic- I'm sure you appreciate!

Call Nathan in my signature or go to www.atlanticbritish.com

update: As my mechanic "owed" me an O2 sensor anyway, i had AAA tow it into him this morning-- called him up and my mechanic stated that it started right up for him after taking it off tow??? i asked him about crank sensor and he mentioned re-checking it in the AM when it will be very cold-- he also mentioned NO codes were found and that may mean IDLE CONTROL VALVE??? Joey or anyone else- what do you make of this? make sense?

IAC or Idle Air Control is possible, but I will bet on the CPS.... I wouldn't bet my pay check, but I would bet a good dinner out on it.

Crank sensors are hot sensetive not cold sensetive 95% of the time.
Rovers don't have cold start issues, especially in Florida where it doesn't get cold. Here in Colorado where we can have -20 below, that is cold and they start right up.
That being said, how many miles on your truck, what fault codes has your mechanic been getting, be specific, when was it last tuned, with new wires?
My concern regarding the 02 sensors, is your missed on this one, they can't cause cold start problems because they are not even activated by the ECU until the engine reaches operating temp, so they are not the cause of your problem.
Get the codes and get back to us.

thanks Mike- I'm SURE you are right...my last tune up was th 90k service at about 80k and now i have 110k it was done w/ proper wires, etc-- i've had all 4 O2 sensors changed, the Alternator was making an unusual noise, (probably a bad bearing) so I swapped that out. I put an after market tow light pkg on about 3 months ago, but drove just fine until just recently w/ the cold weather (i also have a 3 month old duralast gold)...My mechanic changed out the IDLE air control valve this AM, with a spare he had on hand and said that it started up, and is going to dirve it around town w/ the computer attached to see if he gets any codes, but he said there were ZERO as of this morning. I had a problem w/ the 3 amigos about 8 mos ago, bu that was all repaired. (new master cylinder, and modulator and a couple of new sensors)-- and that's about it! He suspected another sensor (relating to the fuel supply?), but it was not showing any codes on it... any thougths?

again thanks so much!!!
