At the request of several, posting this to show what some of us have been doing to our exhaust for heavier off-road use.

As many know on the LR3 and the RR Sport the exhaust hangs low after the rear diff and can get banged up or pinch.

Some of our friends have cut theirs off just after the mid muffler or silencer as it is referred to in the service manual. The vehicle does get a little louder at low end RPM's but over all not to noticeable.

For reference the two #3s in the photo above are the catalytic converters up front, #7 #8 and the two #9s at the back are silencers/mufflers.

I decided to make the rear pipes and rear silencers removable so I could enjoy the regular quieter sounds I am use to during daily use. So I had the pipes cut after the mid silencer and repaired with bolt on flanges added so they can be removed.

With the long pipes off the exhaust blows straight back and partially at the rear diff which I didn't like. I also added bolt on adjustable directional spouts to point the exhaust flow down an a little off to the side keeping them as close to the frame line for the best clearance.

I had this work done a local muffler shop for about $180.

It only takes a few minutes to pop the long pipes and put on the directional's before heading out on a trail run.

As I said you do get a little more of a low rumble sound at low RPM's but not noticeable at higher RPM.s and speed. In fact one our club members has had his cut off for a while and I never noticed it until he told me.

I am sure there will be adjustments as we run this a while but the best part is it is easy to make adjustments with it set up this way.

Neat ideal, can you make a video with the tail pipes off for a sound reference.

WHOA!!!!!!!!!! I wasn't anticipating that! I've been spending Waaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy too much time under the rig. Something along the lines of not being able to see the tree's from the forest I guess?? So simple. Brilliant! Any scavenging issues? Backpressure issues? I'd love to see 1 year feedback on this. My pipes are close to half the diameter at the lowest bend. Standing ovation for having the balls to go this route!

Prior to the install did you have problems with mufflers getting damaged off road?

Thanks guys, it is far from a perfect cover all situations. The idea here was to make them flexable to adjust for different situations. Down here in Southern Cal most of our off-road adventures involve boluder strone trails where our pipes get banged up.

In other areas that are more about deep mud I expect I would leave the long pipes on.

So far water crossing/wading has not seemed to bother the guys that did just cut theirs off and leave them.

The long pipes are basically stock so there is no preformance issue if one decides to leave them on all the time it is easy to pop them off to repair the section that gets banged up over time.

There is also plenty of room where the short pipes bolt on to make lots of different variations of of the directional's to suit other needs.

Not the mufflers, only the piping that drops down to go under the diif and part of the frame. Take a look at the bottom of your LR3 back by the diff and you will see where. Probably even see some scrapes or dents if you have done any medium to difficult off-road trails down here.

Even with maxed out lift you will still dent these pipes if you are doing any level of rock crawling as they are the lowest part of the car.

Not sure what you mean by scavenging issue. No back pressure issue to report from my set up or the guys that just have theirs cut off on either v6 and v8 models.

My pipes were also at least half diameter after 2 years of more serious off-road trails.

No balls needed really. My indy shop was going to just replace the dented sections of the pipes anyway so I thought why not just make them removable and it grew from there.

I'd be a little concerned about exhaust finding it's way into the cabin. However with the effort it takes to close the doors on with the windows up, I would assume the risk is lower than other vehicles. Side pipes that double as sliders would be sweet.

Yes, we thought about that and are monitoring it, it was one of my first concerns. So far no issue with the direction spouts we put on to direct the flow any direction we like, they swivel.

We can modify those easy enough if needed. I have let them idle quite a while stationary to see how they work, so far they seem to be directed just far enough to the rear to minimize it. As I use them more in the field I will get a better feel for it.
