Longer, longer wheel base, lower, Land Rover continues to sacrifice off road capability to entice more soccer moms.

I've got a somewhat mixed response to the new Discovery. I like the flexibility and ease of re-configuring the 2nd and 3rd row seats. Overall styling has me saying meh, but I can see where they are going with better aerodynamics, and I will reserve final judgement until I see one in the metal.
One thing I definitely like about the styling is that they have maintained the tall greenhouse of the LR series vehicles. In my opinion, many of the suv designs of today, including those capable of going offroad have that sitting in the tall bathtub feeling where the beltline is high and the cabin view is squashed...not so here, and that leads to another one of my favorite things about my current LR4...excellent visibility both on and offroad.
Amazed by the fact that the new Discovery is some 1000 lbs lighter than the outgoing LR4 (that weight loss will definitely be felt). I love the 5.0 V8 powerplant of my 2012 LR4, so the powerplant options in the new one are ok...definitely will yield higher performance with the large weight loss compared to the 2016's.
All the additional driver safety aids and electronics upgrades are welcomed (I agree with Dan's comment about reliability...will be interesting to see how the reliability fairs with all the new electronics upgrades).
That new "inner" power tailgate is a bit wonky...I wish they had simply maintained the split-tailgate of the LR4.
I tow heavy, and the videos of that new electric swing-out towing tongue look flimsy as all get out. That looks more inline with the towing tongue standard in europe, so I'm hoping that is not the actual implementation for US vehicles! Given the tow rating of 8,201 lbs on the USA Land Rover site, I've got to think there is something different for towing than what is shown in some of these early Discovery videos.

I could sort of see me buying one down the road, but for now, I'm happy with my current LR4. I also look forward to seeing what they do with the new DEFENDER line, as I expect I will prefer the styling more.

The NAS brochure linked above shows a tow bar receiver and draw bar in the Accessories section. The brochure makes no mention of any electric swing-out tow bars, so I do agree that's most likely a feature (along with Wade Sensing and probably a few other gizmos) that we will not see on NAS Discovery models, when they become available.

Well where should I start?
All in all it is a very nice looking SUV with a great interior.
Maybe it would be better if
land rover had created a different name for it .
It has nothing to do with Discovery and Discovery heritage. At least disco 3 and disco 4 were evolution of discovery line. capable off road machines even without mods.
I love my 2013 LR4 for its utility, comfort, V8, look and off road capability. ( yes I added underbody protection 18 in wheels and AT tires ).
With a new price tag there is no way I could buy Disco5. We bought new 2013 Lux with HD package 3 years ago and it came with V8, air suspention, transfer case standard.
The new MSRP is just a joke. You have to pay extra almost for everything including. transfer case, air suspension. BTW you are paying more for a smaller engine too. ***. where is land rover discovery heritage?. I do not think defender will be any cheaper.
I do like Disco5 a lot but is is not discovery to me. It is another range rover for soccer moms and posers.
Jeep kept wrangler being wrangler and Toyota kept 4Runner being 4 Runner. For sure Land Rover will sell lots of these new SUVs and will gain new clients and $$$$ but at the same time all of us who bought Land Rovers because of their off road capability great daily drivabilty and timless style will probably look somewhere else for a new off road capable truck.
I believe LR3 and LR4 were best all around SUVs. with the right price tag. They are great daily drivers, vacation vehicles, you can load tons of cargo into their square cargo area, can tow and go off roading.
It looks like my LR4 will be staying for many many years with my family.

Should be interesting to see how LR4 prices trend between now and deliveries next summer.

Another note, regarding weight, folks should be manage their expectations when it comes to weight savings. No doubt it will be significantly lighter than the "dual chassis/frame" LR4, but note how they are referring to the weight savings in that video: new *chassis* is 4xx kg lighter than the LR4 *chassis*. Overall car won't hit those savings since they have added a lot of weight in other areas.

Good point about weight. Personally, I don't want a ***** lightweight vehicle. I like driving around in a box made of depleted uranium. Feels more manly.

Allright, I built my car :) ....then at the end there were no options to send it to a dealer and queue for order/call-back.

When is this thing going to be available anyway? Odd to have this much press on their website and I didn't find a single link that said, "available on _____ "

I see what you are saying regarding weight...that's makes a lot of sense depending on the options sheet.

I would note that the Land Rover North America site lists the weight of the gas version as 4835lbs and the diesel version at 4916lbs, so if those specs are true, we really are talking about a weight savings of at least 800lbs, and maybe a bit more depending on the options list.

US press release says it will be on sale starting mid-2017, so it'll still be several months before we see one on the road here, although your dealer may be able to place orders already, not sure. Hopefully they bring a few to the upcoming L.A. Auto Show in November, would really like to check one out in person.
