Dumb question here. I have the full size roof rails with cross bars and over the weekend I had to put a mattress on my roof and it was a pain to strap down with a ratchet strap. What are you tricks to getting a ratchet tie down for the roof?

I didn't have anywhere to "hook" the straps to. So I had to basically wrap the hook around the strap and the ratchet was underneath the mattress which made it hard to tighten. Guess what I'm looking for is some sort of eye hooks that I connect the hooks to.

Land Rover has an accessory called "Tie Downs." They come as a set of 6 and slot onto the cross bars. Not cheap but work perfectly, especially when using rope that fits through the round hole. Land Rover Rocklin has them in stock.

$94! Damn! Wonder why these can't be placed inside the side rails instead of the crossbars. Is there such a thing for the side bars like this?

I tired. They do fit and slide inside the roof rack rails but can't be secured. I searched for an after market tie down that would be compatible but haven't found one. Land Rover is smart like that ...

I ratchet things up top all the time. Most of my things are the same width as the rails or narrower...this may not work with a mattress which could be wider than your truck. Basically...let's see, a picture would be easier but-
- pass your strap under your roof rail and throw the floppy end over your load and to the other side of the car
- go to the other side, loop it under the rail, and throw it back over to the first side
- you now have a double strap going over the top of your "boat" and nothing under it but the rack.
- adjust the strap such that you are tightening the ratchet on the side or top of your load. (if you are on the back rail, I usually stand on the back tire to do this. For the front rail, you have to open the rear door and stand there)

Hope that helps. Have tied all kinds of things on the factory rack and never needed an accessory other than the crossbars which attach to the rails.
