LR5 Release Updates?

To me the Discovery 5 takes its heritage from the Discovery Sport which evolved out of the Evoque. The Evoque was a fashion statement that pointed the way to where the windswept rovers are today.

Better than the LR4 in every way? Hardly. With 20/21" wheels targeting urban travel, lack of V8/power, loss of the lift/drop tailgate, requirement for JLR towing accessories and load of electronic toys the Discovery 5 re-positions the Discovery line even deeper into soccer mom territory.

Will be interesting to see how many are sold as coil only / defeatured models in the $50-60K range as many customers will forgo off-road capability for cost. The secondary market for transfer case, air suspension off road featurs may be challenging. Then again that is not the target market for the Discovery 5. Think more Evoque than LR4.

Look at Jeep. They keep their heritage and the 7 slot grill but all look different. The Cherokee is not just a small Grand Cherokee.

Again, it is a great vehicle and if I were just shopping for an SUV, it would be up on the list. But it has strayed too far to be called a Discovery in my humble opinion.

Keep Compass is returning. All new vehicle...guess what? It looks almost exactly like the Cherokee and grand Cherokee.
It's a "family" resemblance.

That's what LR is doing. Three families with each vehicle within that family resembling the other only with different features, sizes and intended uses.

So we will have three "families" Range Rover, discovery, and defender, so hold your horses for defender if you still want something "rugged".

I played with the configure tool a bit, trading between gas and diesel engines. I'll keep researching, but if I get this beast I'll lean diesel. We'll see. I was sad to see no "split tailgate" option on the configure tool. ;) Damn. How hard would that be? Just throw us a bone there. The Suburban for years has offered a barn door or a split tailgate option. I digress, back to business...

...do any of you with the LR4 surround cameras find that feature worth the $2K it's offered at? I can see the front and rear cams being useful. But I hardly need a car that parks itself or views out the sides. I mean, it'd be a neat party trick if you get a deal on a fully featured one off the lot, but haven't seen any other reason for it.

However, since they have the cameras, the auto-braking, and the steering control, I'm disappointed they don't have any of those cool Tesla hands-off driving options. I know, I know...those guys are **********. However, there are times I'm on the highway, on cruise control, somebody asks me something in the back and it'd be cool to be able to divert more of my attention from the road knowing the car is watching and steering! Yes, that's craziness, I get it. But it's cool. All that Tesla connectivity including firmware updates downloaded directly to your car instead of having to go to the dealer. Wild stuff. They have diverted enough of this car from serious offroading, why not add in that sh*t?

And for those of you say that it looks just like every other SUV on the road I'm really not really sure what you're smoking? It is a damn fine looking vehicle and it's also very unique looking.

The Discovery 5 may be fine looking to some, but it's surely only unique looking to the blind or incontinent.

LR4 is gone, unfortunately, get over it. But let's look ahead to the defender if you want something rugged. Or for god sake's just go and buy A good used LR4 or LR3 for many years to come and **** and enjoy your rig. I mean that in the nicest way possible :)

What Defender? There's no Defender right now, nor has there been in the U.S. since '97. Neither I nor anyone else has seen any new Defender. The closest we've come is the DC100 abortion that Land Rover thought was going to be the new Defender but then acted coy when it met with universal ridicule.

And sure, you can claim a new Defender is going to be as rugged as you want to claim it will be, but the trajectory Land Rover has taken lately has been increasingly less rugged and increasingly more civil.

So please.

I pick my first LR4 up tomorrow. It is a dream come true!

No buyers regret wrt to not ordering a LR5 instead. This is the right choice for me.... But then I am not like most people!

The LR5 might be an astonishing car, but the LR4 has all that...and much more personality!

Lr4 defined its own segment. It is an icon.

LR5 has capitulated to the Q7 X5 XC90 segment in search of $$$$ - there is something depressingly defeatist about this. Like an old hero who sells out on the values that once defined him.

I am happy to be soon driving one of the last, heavy, thirsty, manual seated, twin chassied, split-tailgated, offline, go anywhere, authentic, Land Rovers....and it feels like I got in just in time!!

You can take your aero-dynamic, super efficient, monocoque, all electric, hyper connected, lightweight, deep wading, people carrier and sell it to them asses.... LR5 even has a tray for that!

I wonder if the LR3 was bashed when it replaced the Disco in 2003?

It was, but primarily because of all the electrical wizardry. In or around 2004 (the last year of the Discovery 2), you didn't want to depend on any electrical component of a Land Rover. Additionally, Land Rover's EAS was notoriously unreliable, and many ripped it out of the back of their D2's because it could fail the first time on a trail.

The LR3 saw Land Rover take a stratospheric step forward in reliability, but that wasn't known until they were in the field for a while.

To a lesser extent, people didn't like the 4 wheel independent suspension. But the '02 Range Rover bore the brunt of that change, and people generally came to appreciate how well it worked.

Aesthetic-wise, the rear end of the LR3 was main thing people didn't care for, along with the spare being under the vehicle instead of on the back.

Horrible example. The more you type, the more it becomes evident that you don't get it.

The Jeep Compass has always been, for all intents and purposes, a bad vehicle. There are much better options in the same class from other manufacturers.

Perhaps knowing this, Jeep has tried to give the Compass some perceived value by making it look similar to the upmarket vehicles in its lineup, hoping some of the goodwill earned by the Grand Cherokee or the Wrangler will rub off. In reality, though, the Compass has never had it's own value or identity.

The Discovery always had its own distinct identity, however, independent of either the Range Rover or the Defender. And Land Rover has diluted it now by making it look like the poorman's Range Rover Sport.
