Diesel

I have the 3 litre v6 diesel engine and the filter element does not look like this and is impossible to remove from the plastic cap. Any clues how to do it?

thanks

My 2011 LR4 just hit 150,000 miles...

Glad that this thread is still alive! I need to update it reflect that the oil change FAQ is for the Land Rover OEM of the Jaguar XF 8-cylinder 5.0L power plant that was put in the early run of LR4s... Of course, the newer 6-cylinder engines will be a different system...

Regarding our 2011 "Metropolis" LR4, we are still loving this car! This is our third Land Rover from new, and it has been a tank! I purchased a '99 Disco Series II and then (after a few BMW SAVs) an '08 LR3 - and kept both cars until 100k on the odometer. For this one, the car is still in great shape - so we decided to drive it until it literally dies.

With 150k on the odometer, the ONLY issue that I have had was sticky calipers on the front brakes that wore out new sets of both pads & rotors in less than 25k miles... Other than that, the car has been perfect. Now about the 14-16mph - at least gas is still not too expensive!

I had an issue my first time as well, it does come out you just need to give it a little turn and pull at the same time.

Is changing the air filter simple too. I have the workshop manual but it doesn't mention this and for another car (Mercedes) changing the air filter can, it seems, mess up the air flow sensors (go figure..). Any issues on the Disco?

It is super easy. It takes just few minutes.
You need a long philips screwdriver and 2 air fillers.
BTW how often do you guy clean Mass Air Flow Sensor?

I don't clean the MAF sensor unless I get a funny idle, an occasional CEL or combination of the two... The least you disturb that delicate filament, the better. The only way an air filter change can mess up the MAF is if you install the filter incorrectly or use a K&N filter instead of the factory recommended one.

Thanks Umberto. Last time when I replaced air filters i got them from my dealer. This time I ordered MANN filters C35125 from Amazon. They look identical to land rover branded ones. BTW Mann filters I got are made in Germany and have land rover print on the box.

Thank you so much for your instructions. I am a 52 yr old wife/mother and I refuse to pay $200 for an oil change......wish me luck!

All done, could not have been easier.......now to get the gage to read something other than "unavailable" I followed the instructions in the manual. Ran the engine, waited 10 minutes, on level ground etc. Any ideas?

Well, it's time for my annual oil change, which just so happens to always come around at almost exactly 7500 miles.

I did a bunch of research and confirmed umbertob's assertion that Mobil1 5W-20 meets the Ford WSS-M2C945-A spec (and others). It would appear that Mobil1 extended performance 5W-20 is the better choice in the Mobil1 family and still available affordably at Walmart, etc.

Anyhow, I've been a sap all along buying the massively overpriced, ebay-sourced Castrol Professional OE 5W-20. However, as they are sold in 6-packs and an oil change takes 8, I first bought 12 (had 4 left), then bought 6 more for the next oil change, and now I have two left. As a result, I am inclined to be a sap one final time and get another 6 pack to complete the 8 needed to do this oil change. This oil change will also take me past my fourth year and the end of the warranty period, so starting September 2017 I can use Mobil1 EP with impunity.

Of course, I could just mix Castrol and Mobil1, but I feel funny about it. Thoughts?

EDIT: I see the stuff on ebay now doesn't have the "OE" part on the description.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Castrol-Edg...ash=item4b097b2f79:g:GbsAAOSwFe5X0dH7&vxp=mtr

But it also has the updated standards listed:

WSS-M2C945-A instead of WSS-M2C925-A, and
GF-5 instead of GF-3

But that has to be the correct oil, right?
