I bought my MY11 LR4 HSE in March of 2014. It had 30K miles at the time. Since then I have put about 53K add'l miles on it. I would estimate at least 50% of those miles are highway miles.

In the last 2 weeks or so, every time I start it, I get a brief alert in the center dash message center. The first time it said:

"Service Required in 1500 miles"

Since then it has counted down and currently says 600 miles. I have never seen an alert like this in the last 50K+ miles I've driven this vehicle. Is there some critical service interval at 83K miles? I have had all my usual services done per schedule. Everything after warranty expired has been done by my indy shop. I don't think they have reset any service alerts in the vehicle's computer.

Could it be telling me it's ready for transmission fluid flush and change? It sounds and runs as well as it ever has. Thanks in advance.

PS: Last oil change was at 81K (done by me), and was PRIOR to the onset of this alert, FWIW.

I do my own oil changes so I get this message all the time. As far as I know, there is no way to manually reset this service interval message. On the LR3 there was a way to press a series of buttons in combination to reset this but the dealer controls this message on the LR4.

Thanks Paul. I just thought it was odd that I'm only seeing this after 83K miles. I have done at least 4 and possibly 5 oil changes since the end of my warranty coverage and have never had either an oil change reminder, or an alert like this (which didn't mention oil). I'm still not sure it is related to my oil but it could be. As mentioned, my last oil change was less than 2K miles ago.

Fortunately it only appears for a second or so.

I'm pretty sure the Land Rover service interval reminder works on time and distance and has no clue when you last changed the oil. The dealer probably reset your reminder if you had the vehicle in for warranty work or service.

I did get a complimentary oil change at my indy when they ran a promo but that was close to 15K miles ago. It's possible they reset it then.

So, what happens when it counts down to zero? Keeps telling me I need service ad infinitum?

Pretty much, except the countdown timer starts displaying miles or days with a minus sign in front (to let you know you've overshot the scheduled service by that many miles / days.) Luckily, like you said it extinguishes after a few seconds - unlike other brands that permanently light up an annoying red "Service" LED in the dash until someone resets it.

If a shop reset your service reminder about 15K miles ago, it would make sense it's starting to bug you again now, as that (or 12 months, whichever occurs first) is the preset service interval for our gasoline engines that Land Rover programs into the system.

IIRC, on MY2014 and later LR4s that indicator can be reset manually - no diagnostic tool required. Pretty sure the procedure is posted on this forum somewhere.. For MY10-13s, a $$$ dealer visit or a diagnostic tool such as IIDTool are the only ways you can reset that reminder, unfortunately.

Thanks Umberto. Can a dealer or IIDTool disable the reminder altogether? Since I had never seen it before in 50K miles of daily driving, it leads me to believe that it was once turned off but someone (probs my indy) toggled it back on at some point.

Gonna look into this today. Nagware and idiot lights are not my style.

Like Umberto said, it only comes on for a few seconds at start-up then disappears. After a while you won't even notice it.

I don't know about a dealer, but the IIDTool could only reset it the last time I used it, not turn it off permanently. They may eventually address that with a firmware update, not sure though. I reset it at each oil change, so I haven't seen that reminder, like, ever. :)

Supposedly the the proper method below will reset the reminder however I have never had the ability to make it work. Any other way without purchasing an IIDT or similar?

  • Turn the ignition on
  • Open the hood
  • Open the drivers door
  • Turn the ignition key to position II, If your car has push-button start, press and hold the ” Start” for two seconds without touching the brake pedal.
  • Next, simultaneously press the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal and hold for a minimum of 10 seconds, until a “SERVICE RESETTING.” message shows on the instrument cluster display.
  • Turn the ignition off and back on
  • If the message is not cleared, repeat the process
