Has your LR4 ever left you stranded? Preventative maintenance?

Hello fellow LR4 owners

I recently purchased a used 2010 HSE in very good condition but since this needs to be a super reliable family vehicle I am looking for weak points that I can address before they leave me stranded.

Has your LR4 ever left you stranded (flat tires and out of gas don't count!) and if so what was the cause?

I have been left stranded in other vehicles by a failed fuel pump, dead battery in the key fob, failed crank position sensor and a blown radiator hose.

As my LR4 approaches seven years of age and 70k miles what things should I be prepared to replace?

I've only had my LR4 for 3 years and 24k miles, but it has been very reliable.

Overall, in nearly 20 years of car ownership I've been stranded only twice. Once due to an alternator on A 190E with ~140k miles, and another time due to a bad starter motor on a 2002 Jeep with 130k miles. In both cases they were beater cars so I was within 5 miles from home. In my experience, moderns cars are reasonably reliable. Getting stranded usually will result form not doing preventative checks/servicing of:

-Battery
-Alternator
-Starter motor
-Cooling system (radiator/hoses/pump/etc)

Pretty much anything else that other than a bad sensor here or there will give you warning signs (noises, vibrations, error codes, difficulty starting, erratic revs, etc). Well, that's my experience based on me and many others I know over 20 years of driving.

We have a 2010 LR4 and back in Dec 2014, we got stranded on the highway because the engine suddenly died and lost power to everything except for the hazard lights. There was no warning whatsoever. Mileage was about 49000 at that time. Had it towed to a dealer and they changed the starter and battery under warranty. Turned out the starter was going bad but the system didn't detect it.

I think my alternator may have gone out on me... like.. this week. Its not charging. I see the voltage come up for a few seconds after startup and then nothing. Drove around a few times and only saw the voltage bump for 2 seconds one time.

edit: It does got to just under 14v on startup for a few seconds, when all the fans and such kick up initially.. but then it stops and the voltage comes down to 12.3 or so. Anyone know what might be going on?

Thanks for the feedback. One detail - was it your starter or alternator that needed to be replaced? I know you said starter but a failed starter should have no effect on a vehicle driving down the highway??

A quick forum search revealed that quite a few LR4 (V8) owners have experienced failed alternators.

Sorry my bad. I meant the alternator and not the starter. So as a preventive measure, I have our LR4 checked twice a year instead of yearly just to be sure nothing is about to go bad.

To reduce your chances of being stranded, replace the battery every 3 to 4 years. That seems to be the source of many gremlins. On mine the warning sign was the clock switching to military time after being parked for a while.

I have a 2010 at 93k miles.

Basically battery is number 1 - if it hasn't been replaced just do it.

These won't leave you stranded but worth watching for:

Water pump will go
Compressor will probably go at some point as you will have Hitachi one.
Watch for water leakage into the windscreen cowling at the bottom. This blisters up allowing water to seep into electrics. Once that happens you can get gremlins. Depends whether you are in wet climate or not.
Watch for vermin (mice and rats) in engine bay. Once they start chewing on wires..its hard to fault find.

I've heard Brake light switch is a potential source of of complete power down..but that might be just LR3.

Thats all that springs to mind. Apart from that they are seriously dependable. I've had mine for 4 years and just got another for my wife.

2011 LR4 with 40,000 miles. For me it was the parking brake module that locked in the on position - left my wife stranded - lucky it was really close to home. The release under the cup holders didn't work. Had to have it towed on a flatbed which still destroyed the back pads and rotters. However, I learned from this. The parking brake motor got nosier over time and I didn't think anything of it - then it just failed one day.

I just had the 5 year service done and within one week of it coming back there was a metal sound coming from the engine. Took it back and the water pump is toast. So I learned - you hear a weird noise that's your warning.

My old 2006 Volvo left me stranded once as well so I think it's just luck of the draw.

All things considered the feedback thus fas has been quite reassuring without any real horror stories. Searching through the forum it seems like a few people have had premature (IMO) alternator failures and recently a post about the fuel pump(s) needing to be replaced.

Has anyone ever had the push-button start/stop button fail?

Has your LR4 ever left you stranded? Preventative maintenance?
