Hello gents!

Looking for some input here. Its been a bitter cold winter in the PNW. In the last week I have acquired a whining noise on my 2011 V8. I am thinking its probably the alternator bearings. Interested to hear your feedback.

Well... I just wanted to confirm for you all that it was in fact the alternator. I'm currently broken down in a snow storm. :shot:

Warning light came up saying system wasn't charging, dash became a Christmas Tree shortly after and within 2 min she was dead.

Doh! Bad luck!
Ya I should have trusted my gut. Had to wait 3 hours for a tow in sub freezing temps. So that was fun.

Getting her into neutral was a chore as well... ended up having to hook the battery up to another car with jumper cables and under a load trick the car into trying to start and quickly getting it into neutral.

Currently, the original damaged alternator is disconnected and battery is recharged. Getting a "Steering Column Locked" message and the car will not fire with a fresh battery. Thoughts?

The brand new alternator is going in but, we are trying to determine if there is any other electrical damage before we re-connect.

churious, how many miles on your LR4? I suspect mine is making the same noise.

90k

Mine only lasted 4 weeks after the noise started. I would change it now so you don't end up with an immobilized vehicle like my current situation.

Thanks so much! Exactly what I was thinking as we don't want to get stranded on weekend ski trips.
