Been so focused on the new LR5 that I completely missed any talk about the new Velar. Supposed to sit between the Evoque and the RRS? Any clue on what it is?

I was just going to ask that... the product line is getting muddy. (and I don't mean literally)

It does seem like they're splitting hairs if they try to slot a model between the Evoque and RRS. I haven't seen it reported this way anywhere, but it would make more sense if this was going to replace the RRS. The RRS is on the now-discontinued LR4 platform, so they're going to have to re-design it on a new platform very soon anyways.

It's being billed as the Porsche Macan competitor. Talk about blurring the product line

I saw the Macan and X6 guesses in early articles when the model was first rumored, but that seems to have toned down as the true model details have come out. Now newer articles all just seem to say F-type based SUV bigger than Evoque, smaller than RRS.

The L494 Sport, introduced in 2014 to replace the L320 Sport (2006-2013), is built on the same aluminum platform as the current L405 Range Rover and upcoming new Discovery. The only dinosaur left in Land Rover's lineup was the LR4.

Ah, I missed that. In that case, they do seem to have a lot of models in the same space, unless the Velar really is an on-road performance model like the Macan.

A Macan competitor from Land Rover...****

Why? We had a Cayenne and went to a full size RR SC. When it was time to replace the RR, we test drove a new Cayenne and decided against it for a RRS (got "down sold" by our salesman and ended up with a Zanzibar LR4 instead) But no matter how we cut it, the Porsche just didn't do it where the Land Rovers did.
