I've been debating a blacked out front grille for my 2012. I have genuine black side vents that I've already put on. The main issue is that any genuine black front grille I find is pretty pricey. So I'm wondering if powdercoating the grille I have would be a better / cheaper idea.

Has anyone done this?

I'd be ok paying ~$300 or so for a genuine black grille, but everything I've seen is more like $500+...seems excessive for a vanity part :)

Not sure about powerdercoating, but good old rattle can paint job can look just fine. I know some people use the plastidip stuff, but i don't know how durable it is.

I would probably paint the grill over plasti dip, and definitely over powder coating. (can you even powder coat plastic??) I PD'd the side grills, but due to it's rougher texture, I think it would be too hard to scrub bugs off the front grill.

I had the front grille and side vents professionally painted. No powder coating on plastic unless you want it to melt.
Paid roughly $150 for all of it.
Plastidip is not a good idea over time has dust and mud will be impossible to remove.

You can get a 2012 black grill from Powerful UK for about $120 with shipping at today's exchange rates. You can even get one updated to look like a 2014 plus grill for about $165 if you want. I have not ordered from them, but I think they have a good reputation based on what I have rear to date. Land Rover Badge sold separate, or leave it blank.

2010-2013 look
2014+ look

powerful is mentioned on the UK forums quite a bit and I ordered a light kit from them. They were very responsive to my question. They even listed a new kit because it was mentioned but not listed yet. Haven't gotten the kit yet, but it can take some time for shipping. Not their fault.

I installed their LEDs kit on both my front doors last week, they worked as advertised. It took about 2 weeks for the shipment to reach me in Los Angeles via International Mail - not bad, and everything was carefully packed and felt high quality. I would recommend them as well.
