why not go diesel?

Assuming this is directed at my comments....

I have done Diesel twice, basically at the same time.... When my LR4 was Lemon'd the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Diesel was what I replaced it with. Seemed like a somewhat comparable vehicle as it was similar in dimension as the RRS with the Air Suspension similar to the LR4. Plus we have a second home 435 miles away that we go to frequently so the range was the perk that I was happy about. At the same time I had a job change and picked up one of the now infamous TDI VW Golfs that I would put 150 miles a day on to and from work.

While the Golf was nice as it didn't need DEF the JGC needed DEF and while it doesn't seem like it would be a pain to deal with it kind of is over time. That being said my largest complaint was more around finding good diesel stations. What I mean by that is, at least in my area and the routes that I frequent, diesel pumps are 10x more dirty and nasty than the gas counterpart. That meaning that diesel doesn't evaporate like gas does so the pumps and handles seem to build up with gunk and diesel residue which means it gets over your hands and clothes and interior. At least in my area the pumps were so bad that I started buying boxes of latex gloves to put in the back of the cars for when I would fill up. So much an issue as the other half refused to fill up the JGC because "ew disgusting"....

Other issue with diesel is the option typically costs more. Depending upon where you are with gas prices it would take significant mileage and time to be able to offset the upfront costs. Plus, you have all the EGR and DEF systems that then have to be maintained along with the turbo system and etc, etc, etc....

Based on my experience I find it very difficult to say that Diesel mpg outweighs any of the other crap and potential long term maintenance that diesel brings with it...

Plus, if we have to take a couple ticks off the RRS diesel numbers the numbers really are not very good still. You can go get an X5 BMW Diesel and do almost 30 vs what could be 23-24 in the D5.... I know, apples and oranges but still.... My Q7 can do 26 easy all day long without blinking... I can get 21 in mixed city driving as long as you are not stoplight racing....

City driving totally agree. I focus more on highway numbers as that is where we have historically spent most of our time but are now in the process of moving to a larger city where that probably won't so much be the case anymore except for traveling which we do do a lot.

Idk, maybe if I drove the two options back to back my mind would tell me otherwise. Helps that the diesel engine is only a $2k option and not $5k like some other vehicles.

My LR buddy at the dealership drove the Diesel model out in Utah a couple weeks ago and said it was really great.

@epiclr4 that's interesting insight. Thanks for sharing. You brought up some points that my diesel pushing friends hadn't mentioned. Why did DEF refills get to be a nuisance? What was the frequency you had to fill up and how much warning did the system give you, if any?

@toddjb122

Well, this is going off memory, every box of DEF which I think was 2.5 gallons (check me on this) would last me somewhere in the range of 5,000 miles I believe.... Sometimes more or sometimes less... Sadly it was never very mathematic in how it worked in the JGC. The gauge also wasn't always accurate as sometimes it would seem fine, like you had plenty and you could be in the middle of your journey and start watching it drop just waiting for the warning message that you have to fill it up.

It's just more like one of those things you have constantly do on top of every thing else. Maybe some people don't mind it but at the time I had the JGC, I was putting a lot of miles on vehicles and I maintain all of our vehicles in between our busy schedule. Was just one more thing to order, or pick up or deal with when the warning light came on. Plus if you run out the vehicle supposedly won't turn on or be drivable. So you have to stay on top of it and fill it up.

I would seriously recommend if you have never had a diesel vehicle, I hadn't, that you read up also on the replacement cost out of warranty of the urea system and EGR (might have this wrong, called differently by each company). Can be pretty expensive maintenance items if you are running long term. I know over in the X5 Diesel forums there have been some people out of warranty and it hasn't been cheap. But hey, it's always something right?

I finally got to see one in the flesh at the Dallas Auto Show. Here are some observations.

1. It looks relatively small compared to the LR4 (the Discovery is only approx 1" taller and wider than the LR4), I guess because of the latter's boxy design.

2. The interior feels tighter and more cramped.

3. Rear view is narrower.

4. The interior black plastic trims are prone to scratches. See pic. Unfortunately, this is standard trim on all models with no other finishes available as options.

5. The second row seat height, or lack thereof, is an ongoing object of contention at the UK forum. Per my measurements, Discovery seat height from floor mat level is 12.5". LR4 is 13" - only 0.5" difference. So I sat on my LR4 second row, and come to think of it, they are both uncomfortable! However, the reclining seats on the Discovery help somewhat. RRS seat height is 14" (I measured) and way more comfortable.

6. 2nd row stadium seating is not as stadium-like as the LR4.

7. The seats do fold flat, but quite slow.

8. Inner tailgate folds slow as well, but you can push it down manually if you're impatient.

9. The tailgate on the Discovery opens to a height of 82" (when the vehicle is on automatic lowered access height while parked). LR4 opens to 77", with my 20 in wheels. Many multi-level garages like the one at my office, have a maximum height of 7 feet or 84 inches. See pic. There is a teeny tiny room to spare. I think the tailgate max default height can be reset, though.

10. I was unable to play with the nav screen - it was turned off.

11. Overall, I like it's more modern, albeit less distinctive look. I must admit I do like the asymmetric rear license plate panel, which distinguishes it from a mini-van. It does make the LR4 design look outdated.

Thanks, @namenda! Appreciate the pics and observations.

Spoke to my dealer today who thinks they'll get a demo in April.
I told him I'm deciding between the LR4 and the Discovery. He said I should go for the Discovery because it has all kinds of new technology like being able to fold the seats from my phone. o_O I explained to him that I can see no instance when I would want to fold my seats from my phone. (they must really be pushing that feature on the sales guys)

I do like the automated drive sensors/features that it has. They are all pretty common on a lot of cars, but it's nice to see them here on the LR...but man are they pricey options!

I wonder if you can override the auto-lowering feature when parking.

I camp a lot and I basically live out of the tailgate on my LR4. I need to be able to walk to the back and have the tailgate clear my head without ducking or thinking about it. Sometimes I put my rig up to off-road height just to make the lower tailgate a bit higher and avoid hitting my head (depends a lot on the terrain at the camp site. I am 6'2", but a lot of the time the ground isn't even and you really need that lower tailgate a bit higher)

I am trying to picture doing this stuff on a D5.
