As you may know, I'm closing in on buying an LR4. Most of the ones I see do not have any roof rails, so I might as well start fresh.

By default, I'll get the extended roof rails and then use the cross bars from my LR3. Done.

However, since I'm starting from scratch, I wanted to see if there are any other racks you guys have found that are particularly nice.

My requirements for a rack are pretty simple. I don't go on major excurtions where I need to put a lot of gear up there,
  1. I use it for a Yakima storage box on some trips that attaches to my cross bars, and
  2. I regularly throw kayaks, SUPS and canoes up there during the summer. I don't need or want custom kayak/SUP racks. For my purpose, just throwing them upside-down and lashing them down works.
However, there are some weaknesses with the current rack setup it would be nice to fix.
I would like a bar at the extreme back of the truck. That would make it much easier to throw long boats up there without scraping the roof. I could load from the rear instead of the side.

No more wind noise than the current OEM racks if possible.

I guess that's it. :) See, simple.

Currently I have this hitch mounted rack extender I use for long boats, but it's kind of a pain in the butt;

My vote is for LR long roof rails plus Thule aero crossbars. IMHO Thule makes the nicest crossbars, and the feet are reasonably low profile.

Once you have a good pair of crossbars, you can use whatever accessories/mounts you want (as you obviously already know).

Why don't you take off and use the rails from the LR3? That's what I did. I just put the LR4 molding on the 3 and sold it as if it never had rails.
Man I miss that color...

I didn't know the roof rails were the same since they were standard on the LR3. That's an option worth considering. Although, now that I see the extended roof rails available, I think I'll get those if I go with OEM gear. I need the one extra position up front and I like the look.

So, this thread has been dormant...

...does anyone else have a rack they like that has a bar all the way at the back? (for sliding on boats) and a provision for attaching a skybox?

@BznLR4 thanks for the Thule tip. I'll keep that in mind depending where I go with a rack. I already own the Yakima Skybox, so if it fits their bars I'll consider that route. It should, it just clamps on anything.

I found a company that makes a low profile voyager rack (full roof coverage) and they can put a couple extra cross bars on for me.

So, I'd have a bar at the back, the faring in the front, and two in the middle.

Anyone with one of those tubing racks have any tips or regrets? It'd be custom made so I should be able to tweak it if needed.

I think it'll be this rack, with a molded wind faring... and I'll probably get the sliders also. Thoughts?

Thanks! I missed that thread.

I tell ya, I can use an even lower profile rack than this as I am only putting thing on the top, don't need the side height.

Still, that thread answered some of my questions.

I believe the lowest profile one is the Prospeed rack.
