I have a 2001 d2. I have been trying to figure out an odd problem. I have replaced the ignition coils and plugs as well as checked all the plug wires and all sensor connections. I am only getting spark for one of the coils the other is not doing anything. I have misfires on 1,4,6,7. Can anyone lead me in the direction of a fix. Thanks

Here is what I got for you (from a good LR mechanic)

My first guess would be that the coil in not plugged in correctly. Or, a coil wire is bad. Second, check ALL FUSES in engine compartment. If all this fails, I would say it need a new ECU.

The cool is new and has been plug in multiple times and the wires a fairly new. I will re check the fuses. If an ecu is needed will a used one work and do they need to be reprogrammed. Also my ignition will not turn so the switch has been taken loose so I can be turned with a screw driver I have the key in the original switch could this cause the issue.

If a new/used ECU is provided it will need programmed yes.

As far as the key goes, I have no idea what issues that may cause. The key is coded, but more for the remote than the ignition, but if you took things apart there is a chance something is messed up in the assembly.

I know the system used back in 2001 would have been the Testbook system. In 2001 it was around $10,000 if I remember correctly, not sure what the cost is today. I know that someone has came out with a nice touchscreen version and each model vehicle in the system is around $5000.00

i have a new symptom that started. When first starting the vehicle the rev counter does not work. Given 40 seconds or so it starts. Also I have pulled the crank sensor is there any way to test it.

if you replaced the coil packs yourself, i'm probably giving you info you already know. sorry if that's the case.

when you replaced them, did you take off the intake manifold? (yes, contrary to popular belief you CAN do it w/o removing the manifold. i've done it on mine. it ain't easy. you have to remove the packs from the bracket first) did you remove the bracket that holds the two packs? i'm asking this for a reason.

1,4,6,7 are all on the same pack. if they're ALL misfiring, but nothing on the other pack is misfiring, swap one wire from each pack. that'll tell you if it's wires or the pack. i'm not sure i agree with the ecm idea (or the fuses) i suppose it's possible, but like they say, when you hear hoof beats, think horses. not zebras. if it's a fuse, then the fuse isn't the problem, it's a symptom.

my guess is that you damaged the primary connection on that pack. easy to do when you're pulling that manifold. also, it's damn near impossible to remove the manifold without damaging the main vacuum you see above the intake over by the throttle body.

if you're ambitious and plan to keep the car for a while, here's a suggestion. extend all the wires (primary and secondary) and move the coil packs. there's a blank spot on the firewall in front of the passenger side that's where they should have put them to begin with.

I have rechecked all the plug wires. I have replaced the crank sensor. And I just check for voltage on the coil connector and everything checks out. Any ideas
