I agree with you 100% here. I think that was exactly the point of making the Discovery a more run of the mill "softer" looking SUV. I see the LR Defender trying to take a piece of the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon market...I just looked at their site and some Rubicon models START AT $43,000 and after options can make their way into the $50k range!!! FOR A JEEP....wow. I would guess the new defender would start at $50k-$60k and probably top out around $80 (some think less, but who knows, I see it going up) --- So...do you think the defender will have solid axles or move to an independent suspension like the discovery? Hmmm...

I believe Land Rover has already publicly stated that the new Defender will be on the same platform as the new Discovery, so I'm guessing it's still going to be fully independent suspension, albeit with chunkier components. Reports have indicated they are currently testing the new Defender platform in driving conditions--one would think there would be no need to do that if it was the exact same underneath as the Discovery.

Not that a "unibody" style vehicle cannot have solid axles (see the Jeep XJ), but it's just too big a stretch to think that LR is going to depart that much from the existing engineering. Best case, then, is they make the A-arms a few inches longer for increased wheel travel, and open up the wheel wells a bit for bigger tire possibilities.

I'm curious to know whether the new Defender will only come with 19" wheels. Surely they will at least engineer some 18" wheels to fit over the existing components, ala the Compomotives.

Due to lack of tire options I would hope they stick with an 18" wheel. 19" rims seem to primarily be put on cars whereas trucks and SUVs get the 17/18/20 options....I know why they did it with the LR4 (bigger brakes) but they could've just made a slimmed down caliper...

We all wondered who is going to buy the new Discovery. Another LR forum already has a dedicated Discovery 5 forum and...
How do we get the moderators here to add a new board?
There has been a request on the Site Comments board for weeks.

It would be really nice if they had a non-luxury base version of the Defender. Mirroring the base LR4s you can get in the UK that don't have plush interiors, sunroofs, etc. The fact that these off road cars you put expedition racks on top of have a glass roof! Ridiculous. (maybe that's just because I already broke one putting on a rack.) :hello:

Yeah, I can see a properly kept LR4 lasting a while, the only thing I am uncertain of is the electronics in the vehicle, we don't know how well those will work 20 years from now. ..
...I'm concerned with all the motors they are putting for every possible feature. That's fine if you are going to turn your car after 100K, but if you want to keep a car past 200K, turn it over to the kids when they learn to drive or something... you don't need all those things going. I'm talking motors for all rear seat adjustments, folding, butt bench reclining, hatch back, shift knob thingy raise, etc. etc... Those will go down the road are a pain to replace. I started to see them go on my 2005 LR3 after 220K and it didn't even have as many electronic gizmos as the 2017s.

Yeah, thank you for the new D5 forum!

We took our RR over to the dealer for recall items and they are packed with vehicles, including 6-7 Discovery's and bunch of 2018 Jags. My wife walked up to a Discovery, looked inside for 2 seconds, and walked away disinterested. She thinks its a mix of Ford Explorer and Ford Freestyle. Nothing she would even consider no matter how well it drives (which she has no interest in doing). It is probably a very nice vehicle, just not what we would want.

Apparently the L851, which is a smaller Discovery Sport "Junior" is on the books for production from 2019 to 2026, so there is going to be a baby Disco too, although I cannot say for sure it will come to the US.

All considered, the Jag's actually seem like a better value these days, especiallywith the 5yr/60,000 mile warranties and although the F-Pace is probably too small for our needs, its got a beefier aura to it than the Discovery. Outisde of a rare base model, most of the Discovery's start in the $60k range and the RR's in the 100K range these days and it is hard to see the extra value there for the rising prices. My wife also commented that all of the steering wheels (in both LR and Jag) seemed too small. I know someone here had mentioned that as well and now I see what they mean.

The most recent initial quality survey gives me pause when thinking about all the new tech in the JLR products these days!

Oh great....

"Land Rover Defender will appeal to new generation, design chief says"

Not to be a pessimist, but this does not sound like it will bode well for the Land Rover faithful.

Fiat so low? My friend leased one in like 3 months ago and it works like a charm, but well we will see though I have rather seen good opinions about new Fiats.

Oxmanagain really nails it with this video - this is exactly how I feel about my LR4 as a daily driver. The off road chops are spectacular too, but for day to day this guy nails it and the LR5 doesn't :(

Sitting in bar. Friend who is looking for a replacement vehicle described the D5 as a "Fat lady who is hiking up her rear end skirt" Ouch!

That’s it! Of course, the electronics is the biggest concern. Still, barring perhaps the new Def, I seriously think this vehicle may be even more unique in 20 years’ time than it is today, in which case it would make sense to invest in from-scratch/as-new electronics then, if it breaks down. Also, a new electrical engine under the hood might be en vogue by then:).
