Hello. I am not yet an LR guy, but am thinking an LR4 is in my future.
I currently have a orange TRD Pro 4 runner with 3" lift, bumper, sliders, rigid industries off road lights and a few other goodies.
After 2.5 years in it I'm getting the itch for something new. A 3rd row seat that's actually useable for someone up to 5' tall, while still being a proper off-road/ over landing vehicle is my dream. However, having never owned an LR in the past I am somewhat haunted by the reliability issues that have been reported for decades.
I'm currently looking for a '16 HSE LUX with the HD package and fewer than 20K miles.
Being new here I haven't had the time to peruse all the technicals, but one thing I can't seem to find is whether or not the towing package is included on these truck automatically or not. I've seen how to attach the receiver, but do they all come with that receiver and the ability to attach them or is this something I need to be looking for specifically? I do tow a moderate off-road pop up camper. (3500# fully loaded) so I need a towing package. Also, does the LR4 have an available brake controller? My Runner did not so I installed one which I could obviously transfer to the LR if needed. Just not sure if it's needed.
Lastly, any issues I should be concerned with or things I should look for in my search?
Thanks all. Looking forward to joining the ranks!

Welcome to the forum... Lots of questions here, so I will copy this to the LR4 section.

You're the third person in the past week I've heard of trading in a newer 4runner for a landy. Sounds like you're making a sound decision. You'll notice a huge difference in towing power. There's a insert for the hitch on the back, if you get the tow package it should come with it, if not it's $400+ for the hitch.

Also, my biggest piece of advice is to buy a CPO (certified pre owned) LR. Everyone here will have their own opinion on model year but if you're questioning reliability (which I've never had any issues) then get it certified and then you won't have to worry about it. They're amazing vehicles...good luck finding a '16 LR4 HD with less than 20k miles for under $60k though...They're highly sought after now.

Yep... pretty sure I could sell my late MY15 CPO LUX with HD and black pack(and now compos) for more than I paid for it 8 months ago.
I was somewhat concerned I paid a little more than I should have, but it was/is mint and had every option I wanted including black lacquer interior and tow package.

Seems depreciation is being kind to me for now.

Edit: In fact, did a quick search of CPO MY15 LUX with HD package and they are all at $60k or above... MY16 with same specs are pretty close to $69k all-around.
Definitely higher than I expected for both, especially the 15s. Makes me happy(not that I'd ever sell my LR4).

We've owned our LR4 since 2011 and experienced no issues with reliability. It will cost more than a Toyota to maintain. Pads and rotors last me about 20k miles. A oil change requires a $40 filter and almost 9 quarts of synthetic oil. We chose the LR4 over the 4Runner back in 2011 and are very happy with the decision. You will need to transfer your brake controller, but it tows our travel trailer (23' 3800 lbs) extremely well. The space inside is awesome and the car is incredible off road.

Agreed with all the folks here. Just keep in mind that maintenance will be your biggest cost throughout the years. I recently did all 5 fluid exchanges (front diff, rear diff, transfer case, transmission, and engine oil) and that cost a LOT of $$, but the frequency of them are far and few. The comfort and capability of my 2011 LR4 V8 is awesome! I prefer the V8 over the V6 supercharged, personal preference of power over economy and 6 gears over 8 gears of shifting.

Find one that has a towing package and it should have the 7 plug trailer conduit that has the electronic brakes, if not you can add one. The towing package also has a rear camera system that aligns your trailer with a marker system, so sensors can preemptively warn you. All LR4s have the tow mount built in, wiring and tow hitch receiver not included without the tow kit.

My 5'7" nephew prefers sitting in the 3rd row with one seat down on long trips, because its roomy, comfy, and no one bothers him back there.

My best suggestion is, get it for the right reasons (for you) and if you can afford to maintain it DO IT!! CPO is your best bet, you don't want to find a good deal and end up shelling out $10k+ to fix issues.

Good luck!

I'm surprised you aren't put off by the perceived horrors of LR reliability, Toyota forums are full of it. Anyway, on that note after 82K miles, my 2010 LR4 had a strange glitch with the radio (turned out to be a connector under the passenger seat) that's it. I think after driving a 4runner (which to me feels like I'm sitting in a low ceiling cave) climbing into a Land Rover will feel like you climbed into bed at home, after spending a week in your garden shed.

Brake controller is your standard Ford connector.
Tow package harness is easy to install.
Tow hitch insert pops up on craigslist from time to time for $300 range
