Does the navigation suck or is it just me?

ive been struggling with the nav system since I got the LR. Yesterday it took me in an endless loop around the block in Boston.

Every destination has to be entered by street address. I can't just enter "Metropolitan Museum of Art NYC".

Today, driving back from Boston (fortunately I know the route very well) it kept trying to take me off the major connecting interstate.

I can't move map display around to enlarge, for example, my destination city before I leave home.

I have no problems with other nav systems.

This system is driving me nuts.

LR Nav is absolute dogshit. Even when my 2013 was brand new, it felt like a decade old generation sat nav. The electronics tech in the LR is the biggest let down across all their lineup. It's certainly not their strong suit! BMW's iDrive system should be the industry standard. Considering LR is a premium make of vehicle, it's an insult to see their system rate well below mainstream vehicles.

Best advice is get a good mount for your smartphone and use Google Maps.

I believe that the navigation sucks on almost every vehicle, unless it has a way to interface with a smartphone (such as a Carplay function). I've had Factory Nav in a Honda, Jeep, and now my Rover, and they've all kind of sucked (the Jeep was better than the Rover, but still not optimal).

I drive rental vehicles often, however, and even the cheapest ones with SatNav are starting to come equipped with Carplay, which makes the nav in a $25k vehicle leaps and bounds better than my LR4's.

That's why this looks so intriguing to me:

I'm hoping to be able to connect my iPhone to my iPad via Bluetooth. Then I'd be able to use some decent maps on a relatively large monitor. So far my iPhone won't connect to iPad but I'll try some pro help tomorrow.

My sister in law has a new Ford and it interfaces with he r iPhone. It's perfect! I'm ****** that LR has such trash. I'm afraid to use it in a strange city. Or for that matter anywhere I don't already know the route!

Remembered I can use my iPhone as a hotspot. My iPad will use the hotspot instead of wi-fi and google maps work perfectly well. My iPad is a small one (discontinued, I think) that neatly fits over the useless LR screen.

Gonna give it a field test

I also have an older iPad mini that I'd like to use this way. I'll be looking forward to your report and to any mounting ideas you have.

PS: I see what you mean about the mini fitting almost perfectly in that space between the two dash vents. If I could come up with a clean way to get power to it this would be a great upgrade. Who needs a new Carplay head unit for the LR4 if this works??

Someone did this a while back on an LR3. I think in his case, he didn't have the NAV screen so it meant less to tear out, but you get the idea...
