All of my neighbors and people around town know me, because you wont find a rig like mine anywhere else in the area (like... Iowa)... But I feel bad because they drive around in soul suckingly common and boring vehicles that you literally see every 30 seconds on the road. It is always too late to wave by the time I identify them. I have to resort to memorizing license plates.

I've got the opposite here...I live in a Massachusetts town with a drive-on beach, and the dealer said there are 70 LR4's in our town. I bet 30 are white. Just 2 red and I've got the only causeway gray.

There's a lot of LR4s here in CO, however, none of them are really built up. I really like having one that stands out. I had a Jeep that was pretty well built and looked like everyone else. It's nice to be a bit different.

The diesel gets 5mpg more than the gasoline. It weighs more, tows less, is slower and costs almost $10K more. No review out there has recommended getting it over the gasoline engine. You would never, ever come remotely close to making up the difference in gas costs with it.

Not sure where you're doing your math...

Yes the diesel forces you into hse or hse lux - $10k more than base but I'd buy hse lux gas or diesel.

Diesel always tows better. Yes you lose high speed HP (once you get to 70mph and floor it you go no where) but the torque at 460lbs destroys the 6 banger. I towed with my lr4 and my RRSS and it wasn't even a competition.

You're also picking up closer to 7mpg - about 40% more - and saving about $.20 a gallon over super at the moment (about 9%). I can keep going on the math but I'm pretty sure that's obvious.

If i wanted something that looked like a Ford Explorer, would just get a Ford.

I get the obvious comparison of the D5 and the Explorer aesthetics. But in my opinion the Explorer is a much better looking vehicle. Wider stance, bigger and more rugged looking. I'll be keeping my 2011 LR4 going for many miles.

Before Land Rover was purchased by Tata, it was owned by Ford. Do you think there are residual design obligations from that purchase and that is why the new Discovery Line and the baby Range Rovers all look like the Ford Explorer?

This came up in an earlier discussion and folks thought that the design for the D5 started while LR was owned by Ford. That was the reason for the strong influence between this and the Explorer, but Ford was just much quicker getting designs to market than LR is. ?

That's great input. Thanks.

Do you really top out at 70mph with the diesel (I find myself regularly going 80 when I'm on highways with a 65-70mph limit) or is it just a slow acceleration going up from 70?

Hwy between Moab and SLC I was late to pick up gf from SLC airport so during the wide open sections, 105mph was seen consistently on my lr3.....pretty awesome when you think of what it can do on rough trails too. ;)

I think Ford pinched the terrain response dial and system (or the other way around). Dig around in the engine bay of a LR4 and you will find some FordMoCo branded parts.

I believe Ford had a very positive effect on Land Rover. They invested a ton of money into the assembly and I think it rubbed off. Even during the LR3/4 era LR learned a lot as my LR4 has been almost rock solid for 7 years compared to my LR3 which needed constant TLC. Things that were issues on the 3 have never occurred on the 4 (knock on wood).

Ford acquired Jaguar in 1989. In 2000, Rover Group (includes Mini) was broken up by BMW and LR was sold to Ford. Ford reunited Jaguar and Land Rover as the Premier Auto Group. In 2008, Ford sold JLR to Tata Motors.

Gerry McGovern, design director, worked for Ford from 1999 to 2003, joining Land Rover in 2004. The first product under his design management was the LRX/Evoque.
