This is my first post to the forum...

I recently purchased a 2005 LR3 V8 SE. I got a good price on it because the previous owner thought it needed a starter and there were some other little things wrong with it. It turned out that the starter was fine but the battery was old and needed replacing. before buying I checked to make sure everything was working on the vehicle including the sunroof. A few things did not work but I was prepared to invest some money in the vehicle. To make a long story short, after I installed the new battery, the sunroof will no longer open. I tried the 20-30sec hold of the switch and nothing. Checked the fuse and do have power at the fuse. I tried a new switch because I work at a parts store and knew I could return it if it didn't fix my problem. I pulled the motor and tested it and it is working. I then assumed it had to be the module because it was really the only thing left to try. I purchased a used module off of ebay for $150.00. Installed it and still nothing. I then kind of gave up and put the old module back in and brought it to land rover to see what they could do. After a couple of hours the service manager called me up and explained to me what the tech had found. He also printed what the tech said:

"Attempted to calibrate sunroof with SDD. Calibration failed. Checked for codes. B1B56-87 "No Communication with sunroof module" Fault detected. Checked for power and ground at sunroof module. 12v and good ground found. Checked for continuity between sunroof module and BCM. Good continuity found. Sunroof module found to have internal fault."

They wanted $850 to replace the module. I said thanks but no thanks. I then assumed that maybe the module I bought off of ebay was defective. So I purchased another used module off of ebay for $180. Installed it and still nothing. I cant see two modules being no good off of ebay. I then decided to start checking wires on the passenger side door sill. Every wire in there that was spliced two to one was corroded and falling apart. There was 3 that I fixed all together. One was the key fob fix and one was a transmission fault that kept coming up and the third one that I spliced back did not fix anything that I know of. Does anyone know if the sunroof wires even run along that side of the vehicle? When I look at the wire harness that comes out of the module, it looks like those wires go to the drivers side of the vehicle, going down either the a pillar or b pillar on that side. Im pretty sure I must have a bad wire some where, just not sure where to look? I also pulled the drivers side door sill apart and checked all the wires in there. They all looked fine and did not have any two to one splices until after the b pillar.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had some time today to look more into my problem with the sunroof. I went back into the passenger side door sill but this time I pulled the carpet and that thick foam piece all the way back so I could look at the wires a little further up by the kick panel, just below where they turn up and go to the junction box. It turns out there is another splice up there. One red wire going to two red wires. This wire was corroded at the splice. Spliced and soldered a new piece of wire in and now the sunroof is working!

If you have ever had water on the passenger side of this vehicle, and you are having electrical problems, most can be fixed by checking these wires. I had 4 spices in all that where bad. It is the smaller gauge wires that the splice goes bad on. There where a number of larger wires that where spliced and they where all okay. Also, I had no wires on the driver side that had bad splices and that side also had a bad sunroof drain at one point in its life. Both sides are fixed now.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and help.........Which was nobody!!! LOL

Ha! To be honest, I read it... then said to myself... "man, that guy saved me some forensic repair time in the future." Thanks for the question, for answering your own question, and for sharing it all here.
