Hi all, this is my third day with my new to me LR4. It is a 2010 HSE my 80k miles.

I am not sure if this normal so I figured I would ask you all. In the morning I feel like my engine is a bit too loud, especially when I am maneuvering my way around the neighborhood. Sounds like a low-end hauling when it rev's around 1500RPM.

Does that sound normal? I am not used to the rig and I think it is just what it sounds like.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's fairly normal when the engine is cold - the colder, the louder (RPMs stay well above normal even while idling in your garage)... :) The noise is compounded by the EAS compressor, which often also runs for a minute or two in the morning. After a minute or two warming up, everything usually settles down.

It almost sounds like you're describing the fan clutch issue. I had that in my previous LR4 and it sounded exactly like a super loud revving sound even at low rpm's. In fact, I heard it the first time as I was idling around a parking lot and it freaked me out. I thought the vehicle was stuck in a wrong gear or that it had slipped into neutral and I had jammed the accelerator. I pulled over and turned everything off. When I started back up again, it was gone. It only happened a few times and then miraculously seemed to be the rare issue that fixes itself.

Maybe you can get a recording of it from inside and outside of the vehicle. OTOH, it may just be a matter of degree and a sound you're not used to yet, like the normal warming up sound as umbertob mentioned.

What you describe is what I experience... sometimes it just disappears. What did you do to fix it?

Sorry, but that's the frustrating part-- in my situation it just stopped happening on its own. I had that vehicle for at least a couple of years after the last incident and it never happened again.

I too get this sound every once in a while and it happens at low speeds and definitely sounds like a large semi truck. Comes and go’s for me, glad someone else was able to describe it!

It has been a few days now that I have not heard it. I think it is normal. I do like how it sounds.

It's how I know I'm driving a TRUCK!!

It also helps drown out the sound of the guy next to me in his Tesla, typing on his phone. So inconsiderate...

Umberto, isn't it true that when it is cold, the shift patterns actually change so that you stay in a lower gear (higher revs) until the block warms up?

If you ever have a chance to hear the insane decibel level of what we're describing, you would never mistake it for anything normal or gear-range-related. It sounds like a full cement truck in low gear going up a 45º incline. It is a full-on roar. I thought I was gonna see a rod or other engine part shooting through my hood.
