I've looked at buying the roof netting map holders that the D2 has in the 2nd row to install in the 2nd row of the 4.

my wife said the same thing... it is such a nifty feature and probably does not cost a whole lot... so why remove it? it should even be added for 3rd row passengers who do not have nets on the back of the second row.

What is the potential of any of these storage areas releasing their contents during a serious collision (or off-roading), subjecting the passengers to painful projectiles??

the ones that were built into the vehicle from factory were secure and used the headliner to hold the objects in place. a make shift one like in the original post was not designed or intended to be used as a storage area so i would say it is very likely but no way to answer in certainty what the actual potential is.

I was going to store my brick collection up there. Will have to look for other options...

Everything has some potential for unintended outcomes, I suppose. Not sure how anyone could possibly calculate that potential with any degree of certainty. Let common sense be your guide here.

Before anyone goes all OSHA on the idea, keep in mind that the cargo netting itself would never lend itself to any type of heavy item. Some have mentioned coats, pillow, a small blanket-- light fluffy stuff.

I bought a mantec used from someone on facebook. Its very strong. It was still pretty expensive. They make two versions. One is deeper, but if you want it to work with the cargo barrier you get the shallow version.

The silver thing is a Front Runner Stainless Prep table. It fits into the grooves where the cargo cover goes perfectly. Like it was made for the LR4. I put boxes under the table, and use it like a shelf in the back. The load lugga just gives me another shelf above that. Makes use of that space up top much better.
