Just filled up my LR4 on Sunday and drove it maybe 15-20 miles. When I got home my wife got out of the car and with the door opened we heard a noise that sounded a lot like a small exhaust leak (single cylinder). I got out and I heard this sound coming from the gas cap. I opened it and there was a air coming out of the throat of the filler. It almost sounded like I got gas into a pressurized system that was spitting it out. The air was coming out in spurts, like a pump was pushing gas and air in the system, it was like fluid spitting with the air.

This can't be good. Did I overfill the tank? There was a time right after I filled it that the car was parked on an incline for a while.

No error codes.

Any ideas. I have not driven it since.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I would rule out the basics first. Are you in a warm climate? Maybe you did overfill it and this is just normal expansion, possibly exacerbated by the parking angle that you mentioned. However, if you drove 15-20 miles after you got gas, then you must've burned off at least a gallon of fuel so that may knock that theory down a bit. Is there a safe place where you can park it outside for about an hour with the gas cap off to let it vent and equalize any pressure differential?

I forgot to ask-- is this still happening 2 days removed from the initial incident? If not, I'd consider it an anomaly.

It has been cool here. I will open the cap and see if there is any excess pressure. It has been sitting for a couple of days, driving other vehicles. If there is no pressure, I will run the car again to see what happens and repost.

Thanks

Opened the gas cap last night, no pressure, no surprise. Drove the car today 24 miles, no issues. Perhaps just an overfill....

You will most likely get a code PO496, or similar, eventually. My 2014 does the same. I also checked cap seal and it was better...for a while. The dealer has replaced all of the fuel system, tank, lines, purge solenoids, evap cannister, et . All except the tank pressure test pump...which is sitting on my desk waiting to install. It was gone for about a month after the purge valve was replaced, butback now. Fuel economy also drops by 2 mpg.

I still love LR4!

Robin, I will be on the lookout for the PO496 code. Was there any resolution to that or is it just somethis I can wait for and expect to have the dealer want to replace everything under the sun?
