I wonder how Prince William feels about trading his LR4 for a D5.

Hahaha... I am pretty sure he doesn't care as long as someone else is writing the check and considering the amount of press the family gets I would not be surprised if LR/RR doesn't give them free cars like Audi did a while back.

I have wondered about that as well. The D5 even looks too small for a family of five now. I suppose they can manage a FFRR as it is at least a bit wider. One of the Jaguar cars might work as well, otherwise back to Audi I guess.

In the jpg, but not in the video is one of the D4's security is still using. What will replace them is now a real question.

At least in the D4 you could get equipment and people in the rear portion. Maybe MI5 or whoever will have to transition to Suburbans, but I suppose the new G Wagon is the logical replacement.

Wait, there is hope! Rather than being the Australian Ford Ranger, the new Defender could be a rebadged LR4. Miracles could happen.

Just a few observations:

I was biking near DC this weekend and when I returned to my vehicle there was a new D5 parked next to my LR4. I did a quick walkaround and did a rough comparison of the overall lengths. I have to say that my first impression was how large it seemed from the outside. It's over 5" longer than the 4 and the rear end seemed bulbous and large. However, comparing interior specs it has nearly 8 cu ft less overall cargo space than the 4. The 4 also has a 1" height advantage...not to mention that sweet square cargo space that every family loadmaster loves!

If the new Defender is a rebadged LR4, that will call for a full-on Hallelujah chorus.

When I went looking for a new vehicle to replace my 1992 Roadmaster with about 300,000 miles on it, I was tending to a Tahoe as I regarded the LR3 was being too small. When I actually got to examining the interior of both, I determined that with the flat floor when all seats were down and the square rear hatch, I could get bigger stuff in the 3 than I could a Tahoe. The Tahoe's seats did not lay flat and the rear hatch had rounded corners that reduced the maximum size of a single item.

Yes, if I was filling the rear with shoe boxes, then more shoe boxes would fit in the Tahoe, but when it came to some single large item, the LR3 won.

Now when the time comes to replace the 3, I guess it will be back to a Tahoe unless the Defender surprises me.

LR4 interior dimensions aren't that great. My X5M has more room inside for passengers than the LR4 if you do not factor in headroom. I do not use the 3rd row so that is not an issue for me and the X5M does not have a 3rd row.

While helping my daughter move during college, I once fit a 42" flatscreen, full-sized dresser, stuffed leather chair, and matching ottoman into the LR4. Still had plenty of room for a bag of tools and my weekend bag plus lots of other odds and ends.

Unloading that thing at her apartment looked like some kind of magic trick pulling an elephant out of a hat. I love this vehicle.
