A tire patch kit with new valve stems is wise too. Seems like sidewalls get taken out a lot, which a patch won't help much with, at least as a longer term fix. But if you shear off a valve stem or get a gash, having a kit is nice. Also good to practice getting a bead back on a rim. It's a pain in the ass. (i have only had to do that once, and now I don't air down past 20 unless I can really help it)

mbw - All of my offroading exists in the rockies throughout Colorado. What tire pressure do you recommend running if you do not go below 20psi? Thanks!

I'm not going to claim to be a tire expert, so I can't say much here. It depends on the tire, the weight, the terrain and how likely you would loose a bead.

If you need the traction, you want less, but if you want to protect the sidewalls from rocks, being low might make that a larger risk.

Living in Iowa (mud, trees, fields, grass) and only traveling out your way occasionally, I can't say I have enough experience with the sharp hard things like rocks. :D

With sharp rocks, your greater danger is puncturing a sidewall versus losing traction. I wouldn't air down at all if you are using 19" wheels.

If you've gone to 18's and are wearing E-rated rubber, feel free to air down a bit.
