Discovery II alternator
You don't need to remove the fan shroud. Two bolts hold the altenator on. The belt tensioner will release with a clockwise twist on the bolt in the center of the pulley. There are 2 wires in the alternator itself that have differrent size posts. You can't go wrong. I got a later model used...- Roverhound

Electrical Problem
I'm willing to bet you've lost a ground somewhere. You might want to chase those around first. Look under the dash around the fuse box and under the glove box. Don't just throw parts at it, trouble shoot it.- Roverhound

Actually, those are the same symptons I had. The 2 u-joints in the hooke joint are not greasable so they are likely the culprits.- Roverhound

Not true. I just did mine this past weekend. The hooke joint is a little work but other then that it is a standard u-joint replacement. Fisher auto parts u-joint #344 is a US made product that comes with zerk fittings. To do both shafts you'll need 4 of them. I got mine for about $22. Not cheap...- Roverhound

BG44K, and other additives?? how to best use?
I just did the Seafoam route on my 2000 d2 recently as a preventitive. For intake cleaning I pulled the hose off the passenger side valve cover and poured it slowly in the hose. Nope, no reset on the d2. Try the battery trick. It worked for me before I got the software on my lap top to reset it.- Roverhound

Didn't realize you had a d1 so the reset may work. It's worth a try. Yeah Zappa ruled. Ever tried getting all his works on cd? There's hundreds of titles. He did such a wide range of music you can't collect them all!- Roverhound

Adam, to reset the light pull the negative lead off the battery for a few minutes. If the fault is not there anymore, it will go out. I just ran seafoam through my 2000 d2 and had the light go on so I think it's normal. I reset with my computer, the fault wasn't even present anymore. As far as...- Roverhound

To reset the codes, disconnect your negative battery cable for about 10 minutes. That will shut your light off unless you are still throwing codes.- Roverhound

has anyone tried a headlight swap?
IPF makes a kit that will allow you to run 95w/145w low/high beams. It consists of relays and wiring harness. That would be a good option for more light.- Roverhound

New owner/dumb question??
No BMW did not make the Disco motors. It's still a LR design based on the old Buick aluminum v8. The transmission is a German made ZF unit. Much better then the GM garbage BMW used in thier own cars throughout most of the 90's.- Roverhound

Electronic degreasers/contact cleaners will NOT leave a residue or harm coatings. That's why I said Electronic degreasers/contact cleaner. As stated before, CRC available at Lowes is good for this application. Just make sure the cleaner IS for electronics. Let the MAF throughly dry out before...- Roverhound

Had a small group. Me and a d90. Had fun wheelin' in the rain. Sad to say, the next Monday the main portion of one of the trails we ran was closed off by the Forest Service.
