I had a 2005 Jaguar that did the exact same thing when filling up. Definitely the charcoal canister. Hope it's not like the Jag because you had to drop the whole rear transaxle to get to the canister.
Mine has an awful tick that is most likely a lifter. Cold weather it is extremely loud. In the hot weather, you can't even hear a tick. Does weather effect yours. I put lifter quiet in and it went away for about a week but came back in cold weather.
The mechanic did reset it. No engine light. Two miles down the road, light came back on and vehicle must go through drive cycle. Welcome to the wonderful world of emissions.
Just happened to my 2010, right after I got it out of the shop. It is the two Positive Crankcase Ventilation disks on the valve cover. You can order them on Amazon for cheap. They work. Just have to replace them and drive the LR4 for about two hundred miles "drive cycle" and it will reset...
There is a plastic crossover pipe sitting on top of the engine. They crack and leak down from the top. It is a "x" shoed pipe that are commonly probe to crack and make the engine seem that the water pump is leaking when it in fact is not.
My 2010 ends just in in the arch of the wheel well. You have to open up the black plastic wheel well just enough to get the connecting plug. It's not simple but it's there. Good luck.
I have a used 2010 Land Rover Discovery and purchased the extended warranty through First Auto protection for about $4,700. They covered the replacement of the lower control arm bushings with a $100 deductible. Warranties on Land Rovers is highly recommendable.
