    Rotating 5.0L Engine Manually

I used an old piece of coolant hose that I had laying around. It was almost a 90 degree elbow so it worked out great. I put a hole in the elbow to feed the blasting pipe through, then added some window insulation foam about a inch from the tip. The rubber hose molded somewhat to the intake port...

    Diy timing chain

Let us know how that works out. I took a break from working on the darn thing due to the holidays. I was able to finally put enough leverage on the blade to make the tensioner click and hold the chain without any slack. But when I went to turn the crank manually, the cams sprockets slipped...

    Diy timing chain

LOL. Keep digging myself deeper. Stripped the head on one of those sprocket bolts and tore one of the filter on top of it all. Dealer wants $14 per bolt and $40 per filter. Two months after starting this "project", I'm still chasing parts.

Castrol EDGE EP 5w20 @ 8K for the past 3 year of ownership. Got the car with 85K, so guessing the damage was already done. The thing is, I just did an oil change less than 1K ago and the oil looks dark. Don't think I'm overheating. I saw that video pop up on my YouTube. Looked pretty convincing.

    Diy timing chain

More frequent oil change maybe the best way to combat this timing issues. Even with the updated tensioner and blade on newer vehicles, I think the overall system suffers from lack of oil flow. Old oil seems to accumulate in certain components and allow to cook and build up. These are cam...

Filter looks ok, but the oil is nasty... Thick and super dark. Makes me think there's a circulation problem. @djkaosone sorry to hijack your thread.

Belt and spark plugs at 7 years? Other comments on maintenance

They are the 7c10s. The LR packaging is super legit. But researching this counterfeit stuff turned up some elaborate fakes. From what I've seen, they're supposed to have 4 digit codes stamped on them. There's 5 digits stamped on mine. Can anyone confirm? I've got a set coming from AutoZone to...

    Diy timing chain

I was going to ask how you did yours. The first couple times I just pulled the pin and press as hard as I could but no click. The blades could still be moved back a little. I thought this was acceptable as oil pressure would provide additional tension when the engine was running. But every time...

Belt and spark plugs at 7 years? Other comments on maintenance

Dang it! I just installed a set of "Genuine" Land Rover plugs from NGK bought from eBay ($58). Shoulda known... Thanks @gsxr for the heads up. Gonna pull them and check them again now that I know what to look for. Someone spent a lot of time in R&D to make these look so legit.

    Diy timing chain

@avslash Sorry for the late reply. I'm only replacing the tensioners and guides. After much reading and checking current conditions of the chains and associated gears, I felt it was more prudent to leave all those as they are (including Aux chain). Hope it's not a decision I will come to...

    Diy timing chain

Tensioners are NOT ONE-TIME USE!!!! So I played with the old tensioners a little. Was going to cut them up for $h*! and giggles... Was really out of curiosity. Pressesd them down with some pliers and felt the ratcheting mechanism click and as it went down and lock along the way. Kept going...

Thanks for the info! I don't think that projects like this would be possible without the detailed write-up and contributions like yours. Much appreciated!

What part of the car is this ?

It goes around the door striker.

    Diy timing chain

Thank @djkaosone. That's what I figured. Wanted to make sure before I dropped another $300. Why are they designed like this? Some workshop diagrams even shows the instructions to install the piston, pushing it in, and inserting the pin. Also, can you elaborate on TDC and BTDC? Are you saying...

Is it dangerous to drive with these warnings?

It's nothing the mechanic did. Same thing happened when I had the car towed on a flat bed. The wheels we're ratcheted down and pulled out of alignment enough for the car's stability control to go in limp mode. The steering wheel was at the 11 o'clock position. Alignment made everything go away.

@djkaosone Thanks so much for you trick to remove the fuel rail. Genius! My approach with a bottle jack isn't as classy but got the job done!

    Diy timing chain

HELP! I am now elbow deep in my timing chain replacement and need some help. Got everything torn apart. Replaced all the guides and tensioners. Lined up all timing marks. Pre tensioner and tightened everything down. Went to turn the crank to test. Half way through the first turn, the chain...

2 Year Service Sticker Shock. Just me?

If I don't do it myself, then I'll go to British Unlimited, off if 45 just south of the Woodlands. Cool guys with decent prices. Always have nice Defender projects in the shop.

    Transmission swap

I had contemplated doing the transmission swap myself but ended up having a shop do it. $3,000 to rebuild the trany with torque converter and $1,000 in labor. You really need a lift or a at least a high ramps to this job. The transmission will need to be angled downward slightly to access all...

    Front diff making metal

Good to hear that. Did you have to get anything extra to finish the job? Like gaskets or o ring? Just want to make sure I dont have to run to the part stores or wait for something to get shipped.

So you finished the rebuilt then? I've got everything disconnected and ready to drop. Will do that this afternoon and replace those bearings.

    Front diff making metal

Hey Krill, Did you have to move the transmission oil cooler like the manual says to do? Does it get in the way of one of the mounting bolts?

    Front diff making metal

Don't give up. You've got the hardest part. You'll need a bearing separator. I bought one from Harbor Freight ($40 with coupon) in preparation for this job. Didn't get started tho.

    Front diff making metal

Mine started to grind a few months ago (approx 105k). First thought that it was the wheel bearings so I replaced them. They had a slight play, but weren't causing the vibration and noise. Got the bearing rebuilt kit a couple weeks ago but haven't been able to find time. I'm hoping to start on it...
