WTF caused this to happen to the oil???

How is the engine doing, now that you've changed the oil? I think that passenger vehicle diesel engines need to have their oil changed every 10,000 kms. You may have to change the oil and filter after 5000 kms just to give the fresh oil a chance to dissolve all that gunk. I don't know why oil...

2004 Discovery Engine Misfire - could it be the head gasket

Wow, what a saga! Sorry to hear of your woes. Like you, I'm the type who just wants things "right", and I'll tenaciously work on the problem until it is fixed. Trouble is, with a Rover motor, there's just lots of things that can go wrong. Like for example, in your case, I was just about to...

Clunking when accelerating What could it be/

Mike is absolutely right. There's always some "slop" in a permanent 4x4 system. Other makes also have this trait, so it's normal. You just learn to depress the accelerator more gently instead of blipping it.

Rotors - Who makes 'em cheap and good

I just use Land Rover genuine parts. They blacken the wheels with the brake dust because the genuine pads are quite soft (and so are the discs) but the braking performance is pretty good too. Now that Land Rover have reduced their parts prices (at least in Australia anyway), it's not so...

    Front drive shaft

Fair comment, Tom. I actually don't do the work myself, but simply take the propshaft to a driveshaft specialist and they tell me what needs to be done to it. On two occasions, they did replace the center ball joint because it was cactus, but on one particular shaft they said it...

    Ticking Noise Continued

I have had this ticking problem twice on my motor now. First time, it was the rockers - there's a TSB from Land Rover to replace the rocker due to the cap where the pushrod pushes up against the rocker becoming loose for a Discovery Series I V8. LR must not have learnt anything from that...

Clunking when accelerating What could it be/

Generally speaking, the full time 4x4 driveline on the V8 will have a bit of slop in it, so if you stab the throttle after you've been off throttle, it will induce a clunk. Can't be avoided. Land Rover did not implement "anti shunt" control on the V8 like they did with the diesel TD5 motor.

    Front drive shaft

I think it really depends on how bad the Unis in the Hookes Joint have degraded to. Sometimes it's OK just to replace the two unis if the center ball joint is still OK.

    Coolant smell under the hood

Unfortunately the Rover V8 head gasket is fairly thin in it's cross section at the rear of the engine block. I've seen a number of motors where there's dried up ooze of coolant weeping between the head and block at the rear of the motor. Obviously this is hard to see when the engine is in the...

Oh, and I'm assuming that you've already checked your plugs and they are all OK.... And that you are not losing any coolant....

    cleaning o2 sensors

I don't believe there is a way of cleaning the O2 sensors. Just get them replaced, and stick to the genuine part. I've tried aftermarket ones and they aren't any good, throwing fault ECU codes. If you are planning on replacing the O2 sensors yourself, handle the new parts carefully because...

    96 power dropoff

It could be that the engine is not getting a good spark because of losses through the spark plug leads. Do the following test (but be careful!) Park the vehicle somewhere pitch black. Maybe try this test at night! Have ready in hand a spray bottle of water (wife's ironing water spray...

    Need DII engine - options?

Can definitely be done. My 4.0 V8 slipped a liner, so I had all the liners replaced with top hat liners. And since the engine was apart, I got them to fit a 4.6 crank. She now goes at a decent rate of knots.

01 DII front suspension is a brick

If you want to keep your DII 100% genuine, you can look for a set of front springs for a TD5, which is rated higher than the V8 due to the heavier weight of the iron block of the diesel motor. Could be hard to find TD5 front springs if you are in the USA though, coz the TD5 was not sold into...

01 DII front suspension is a brick

It just means that your front springs have sagged to the point where there's not much space between the bump stops and the axle. The smooth ride is due to soft springs, but soft springs eventually sag and this is why you are "crashing" or "bottoming out" over a speed bump. Fitment of...

Truly "Happy" Disco owners- let me know if you exist!

Howdy again, I guess my comment about some owners being lukewarm about their vehicles are the ones who just want to drive a nice "badge" but don't really take their vehicles offroad to do anything of the things that it is capable of. But that's to be expected because not all drivers are...

Truly "Happy" Disco owners- let me know if you exist!

I think that for every 1 happy Disco owner, unfortunately there are probably about 5 others who are a bit lukewarm about their vehicles and 2 who have had absolute lemons. Seems like that, from my 8 years of experience with Land Rover Discovery Series II. Mine slipped a cylinder liner...

    2000 D2 transmission Problems

If the fluid looks really dark red or dark brown, then your clutch packs in the auto trans are probably wrecked.... :ahhhhh: Cheapest option would probably be to swap out the transmission with a fully reconditioned one. It may cost more to repair the existing transmission that you have.

Does Disco II V8 motor have a PCV?

I've noticed that the pre-Thor V8 engines have a PCV (positive crank ventilation) valve? But on my Discovery, there isn't one in the usual place. Does anyone know where the PCV might be? Thanks in advance, Lawrance Lee '99 DII V8 auto Melbourne, Australia

    back door lock

Chongo, Back door lock access on the DII is much more difficult compared to Disco I because the lock itself is not readily accessible from the outside. But try this simple fix. Park the Disco II with the nose down, e.g. on a steep driveway. Use the remote release to unlock all the doors...

    another coolant problem

Hi Scott, Thanks for sharing the pictures. That's just awesome. Got a question for you - I'm curious why you powder coated the intake manifold and then painted it black. Was it simply for asthetics, or is there some benefit in doing this? I noticed that the manifold looked very...

    disco II trans service

I think your mechanic is confusing the 4 speed ZF4HP22 gearbox in the Discovery II to be one of the newer 5 or 6 speed ZF gearboxes that have "lifetime" automatic transmission fluid, maybe simply by the implication that there's no fluid dipstick to check the level. Unfortunately he's wrong...

    Bucking Disco

Sounds like your engine is not getting enough fuel. Could it be that your fuel pump is on its way out? When you took your vehicle to the dealer, I think they went down the path of troubleshooting by using the Testbook or some other OBDII code reader to have a look at the ECU. And that's...
