Looking to buy a car under $7k to drive from Canada to Costa Rica (and then keep it in CR). Almost bought a 4th gen Toyota 4runner for $6700 w/ 240K (seems like the best option for a 4x4).

BUT came across some LRs and thought that I've always wanted one! :) Now considering them. Are they as reliable as a Toyota? Are their 4x4 capability comparabale (or better) than 4runner? Looking at 2001/2002 Discovery II or Freelander.

Here are my 3 options. Your thoughts welcome!

Well I have both and the Toyota beats the heck out of the Land Rover hands down in reliability. I am always working and fidgeting with my LR, but it is a labor of love and I have the skills to do it. If you don't better stay with the 4Runner

Are they as reliable as a Toyota? No. Are they as easy to get parts for as a Toyota? No. Is their 4x4 capability better then a Toyota? Yes. (Get the Toyota)

run from the freelander.... Then it becomes a question of parts availability in CR and if you are mechanical. My last rover I drove regularly was a 1997 D1. I put 50,000 miles on it with out any mechanical failures at all (not counting needing a battery). My 2002 D2, I put head gaskets on it, but didn't keep it the 10 years I had my D1. (D1 was 85% off road only and never failed to get me in or out of the mess I put it in)

All that said, a Toyota with that many miles may end up being a problem as well depending on how it was taken care of.
