cross bars ($655)

Gmosley, $655 for cross bars!?! Is that including the roof rails? If it is and you are at all $$$ conscious, I would suggest doing the roof rail install yourself. I can't say I am the handiest person in the world, but this install took me less than an hour. There is a youtube video on this site that walks through the install in pretty good detail. My dealer quoted me a 2 hour labor time, which is criminal. This really was one of the easiest aftermarket installs ever.

Mine were the extended roof rails, but I believe the only real difference is that you cut a little less of the weather stripping.

Gmosley - After market rock sliders should be in the $800 to $1200 dollar range. I am considering these: http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2212 or these: http://www.urbanoffroad.us/index.ph...ill-guards-sliders-with-45-90-outriggers.html.

I had the dealer install an OEM ladder for about $400 incl. labor. I bought Yakima cross bars from AB for about $200 although I see from their web page (http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/CTK.cfm) they are now $300. I may have bought them on sale.

David

ricker - how are the Yakima bars working out for you? I am most likely going to go that route because 1) their basket appears to be more robust than the LR gear and 2) it can be relatively easily removed. I will only use it 2-3 times per year and prefer not to have the basket or even the bars up there when I am not using them.

Did you use the Yakima bars with the LR OEM roof rails? If so, what size roof rails (short or extended) and how did the bars connect? (I think Yakima has a post or something that would attach to the rails?)

Do you use a wind fairing and does it work?

I am thinking that I will get a lift system similar to what is offered by LR that attaches to the ceiling of my garage and can lift the basked off the LR4. I may leave the crossbars/posts attached to the basked and lift the whole thing leaving only the OEM rails. Would that work?

Dan:

I would suggest looking at Thule if you don't have any products already. Not sure about their basket options but their rails work with the factory rails very easily and their newest AeroBar option is extremely quite when at highway speeds. I have a pair left over from my BMW and will be using them again on the LR once I get my short roof rails in. I will do a full install write-up on it and show the rails once done.

Thanks, epiclr4! I will do that. In fact, I was at REI the other day standing between the Thule and Yakima "displays" and trying to see which one I prefer. Glad to hear the aerodynamic bars (they both have something similar) are quieter. I will definitely do that whichever bar I use. It may come down to the basket option. Or maybe the color. Oh, wait, their all black. ;-)

Dan - I actually use a Baja Megamule rack (http://www.bajarack.com/the-mega-mule-1) on the Yakima crossbars. It is easily removable, sturdy, has a built in wind fairing, and has good expedition type accessories (although I so far only have a shovel bracket). When not in use it hangs from my garage ceiling. It can't stay on all the time because our office garage has a 6'-6" height limit and the truck is almost 6'-10" with the rack. This is the lift I am using: http://www.racorstoragesolutions.com/p/detail/phl-1r?AspxAutoDetectCookieSupport=1. I don't use the tray and just hang the rack from the cables. You probably could leave the bars on the rack but would need to check the clearance when the garage door opens. It probably would not work in my garage so I just leave the crossbars on the truck.

I ordered my truck with the standard short roof rails and the Yakima landing pads fit perfectly.

The fairing works OK. You still get some wind noise but that is probably to be expected.

David

Thanks! Were those the Yakima "aero" bars? Would it make any difference?

Thanks Ricker for the links. Hoyos06, since I already have the extended roof rails with the Black Pack, they are asking the $655 just for the cross bars. I am in no rush for the accessories, but if the vehicle is sitting at the dealer for a week or two before we arrive, then I wanted to take advantage of the time. Again, thanks for all of the info
