I have a 2000 Land Rover Discovery 2. Can anyone tell me what this is supposed to do? I press the button and although the light with the "S" lights up on the dash, I dont feel any change at all. I have had this land rover for about 2 months and its the best vehicle I have ever owned. There was no owners manual with it so im trying to get more familiar with it.

sport mode changes the shifting pattern of the transmission.

easy way to describe is to turn it off and accelerate hard or be at 60 and floor the fuel pedal... then do the same with the sport mode on... you should notice that it shifts later closer to red line during hard acceleration and should shift down faster under hard acceleration from say 60 mph...

At the risk of sounding like a *******... it's highly advisable that all LR owners actually read their owner's manual. I concede, this is the first car I've actually ever done that for and I learned several things I otherwise would likely never have known!

MODE SWITCH
In High range press the mode switch to select
’Sport’ mode (the ’S’ information light on the
instrument panel will illuminate).
In Low range press the mode switch to select
’Manual’ mode (the ’M’ manual information
light will illuminate).
Press the switch a second time to return the
gearbox to normal operation.
’Sport’ mode
With ’Sport’ mode selected, the gearbox is
more responsive to accelerator pedal
movement - downshifts occur earlier and
upshifts are delayed to make optimum use of
the engine’s power while accelerating. Select
’Sport’ when increased acceleration is
required, or when negotiating long inclines or
twisting roads. Note that driving in ’Sport’
mode will increase fuel consumption.
’Manual’ mode
In Low range, with ’Manual’ mode selected,
the automatic transmission functions as a
manual gearbox requiring the driver to move
the selector lever manually to change gear
(’D’ = 4th gear). Manual mode will provide
maximum vehicle control and engine braking -ideal
for use in severe off-road conditions.
Note that ’kick-down’ is disabled and that
automatic downshifts will only occur to
prevent the engine from stalling.
NOTE: Switching off the engine or using the
transfer gearbox will automatically cancel
’Sport’ or ’Manual’ mode.
