The only way to check or test the ECU is either with Testbook or buy puchasing the $1000+ software and do it yourself...

Your issues are way above any thing I have seen so far, I will contact a couple of people and see what they think.

Ok, this is what I haven received back from a knowledgable Rover person. (read the leak down fuel pressure part, I forgot about that... pressure at the rail at start up is good, but how long does pressure stay there?

First things first.... This cat needs a Service Manual. He is playing part darts hoping to stumple on the right part..... Testing is the order of the day.

A Gasoline engine, from Acura to Volvo needs 5 thing to fire..

1) Air
2) Fuel
3) Compression
4) Spark
5) Timing.

If you have a misfire, one (maybe more) of the 5 is missing. First thing is to figure what is missing..

He needs to confirm Fuel Pressure, and that it isnt bleeding down.

Whos spark plugs did he use?

Timing is tough to test on a GEMS car, but if the other cylinders are firing ok, it's likely good.

He tested compression... His was a little high, but I wouldnt worry. A vacuum gauge would help him check for sticking valves..(VERY possible in a 96)

And, he needs a service manual.

I know this may seem obvious or not applicable but as far as the high idle is concerned have you checked the throttle tension?

The only disco's I'm familiar with are the 96's because I own one but on mine there's an adjustment nut at the end of the throttle cable under the hood right where the cable exits it's sheath. If this is cranked down, or the bracket bent, it would run high but drop RPMs when you put it in gear and step on the brake.

Just a thought

got all the manuals
you know
ALL of them
lrl0079, and all manuals on disc
I will find this
and I will let you know why my 96 rover is down with a cold
and maybe
you can help someone else
however
it is a problem in the engine management
all you have to do is drive it
uncontrolled engine
seafoam did my idle in(how would I have known)
seafoam in, idle whacked
new MAF
new VSS
new IAC
new coil pack
new cam sensor
new crank sensor
new fuel filter
new fuel pressure regulator
new TPS
I have removed all of the top end of this 4.0 looking and I have rebuilt all and tested all for leaks
parts darts
thats funny
I have nailed a 10.98 in a 427 camaro

I say again
this thing comes and goes
standing next to it
it idles smooth, then drops cylinders
then it come's back to a normal idle like when I got the rover, it has great drivability, until, a load
or 4th and 5th about 50mph

then it is really obvious,
I asked for help
things have changed
now you will learn from me

say man
I have been around

I think this is a uncomanded engine parameter

sensors are not being seen

nothing I do changes things

I can NOT afford test book

for the record, rover does pull the ordinary people out of ditch

nope
I remember
the Idle
all good until sea foam
funny plenum on a rover
now are all of those injector tubes supposed to be solid?
from what I read rover engines are tough
built in rev limiter
this I have tested
in snow
power shift 1rst to 2nd
I will blow this cheesy british piece of ****
up on my terms
then I will drag it home with my chevy 400 small block short wide
and never talk to you again
my chevy is buried behind a wall of snow
it will start right up
I wonder if there is a rover recovery site?
makes me wonder
I SO love my winch bumper
I tried
chevy= no ********
the book calls it
you know
robust, immobiization
guess I need a service manual
for a catt
you know
this cat needs a service manual
I do not like rovers
they remind me of my dads death
so
good luck

rob28, I am sorry that things are not going well on you rover, I have tried to help, I even contacted a senior Land Rover tech, I am not sure what else to do, if you are having that kind of issues.

If you don't like it as much as you say, part sell fast on Ebay and you may even get your money back... Part it out.

God bless and have a wonderful day.
