Hello everyone!

I'm the owner of an '11 LR4 (5.0 V8) that has concerns with the transmission in my vehicle. It has approximately 80K miles on it now and I'm experiencing several problems, especially when the ambient temperatures are over 90°F. When you first start the truck and select reverse, it just sort of jams into gear. It's not a smooth transition from park to reverse. When you start off going forward it seems to be ok, but as the car warms up the shifts start to get slower and they're not smooth at all. Each shift especially 1-2, 2-3 is clunky and it makes your head move forward and back. It's not the worst thing I've ever experienced but it's not how it's supposed to be. I've also noticed that when the temperature outside is over about 90°F which has been a lot recently, the vehicle shifts the worst and I hear what sounds like torque converter shudder in 3rd gear. I've been told 10 different things by 10 different people and I haven't seen a lot of posts on here or any other forum particularly about the LR4 exhibiting the same thing. I know the ZF 6HP transmissions have a history of valve block issues, but I've no clue if that could cause the torque converter shudder. I don't know if I just need to do a filter and fluid change or if that's going to make it worse. I've been told by some it will improve or fix my issues and others that it will break the transmission to change the fluid and filter.

At this point there's no stored faults, I've reset the transmission adaptations with iidtool and followed some procedure I saw that said to accelerate to ≈55mph (6th gear), then coast all the way to a stop, hold brakes 15 second and repeat 5 times, all to reset the adaptations. It didn't really seem to do anything at all.

If anyone has experienced these issues or knows someone who has, I'd really appreciate some information/recommendations.

Thank you!

It will not break the transmission to drain and replace the fluid and filter. In fact, if you don't do it as a matter of course, you can rest assured the transmission will probably be toast by around 130k miles.

If you are doing it yourself, search on the forum for a good how-to guide, or look at the youtube video posted by Atlantic British. Many have said that replacing the fluid has helped to smooth shifting.

I change my fluid and filter at 83K (a little late IMO), and it greatly improved the shifting, and lowered the trans temp.
As Ryan said, it cant hurt.

Thanks you two for all your helpful suggestions. I am going to just bite the bullet, order the filter/pan and fluid kit from AB and have my local repair shop do it. While I'm sure I could figure out how to do it myself, I'll just have a local European car center do it for me. I'm just too nervous I'd mess something up and this thing was too expensive to have sitting idle while I order a new transmission. The thought alone makes me cringe. I'm also going to have to replace the rotors and pads. Two sets of rotors have warped almost immediately, even after forking over for all new hoses and calipers. On top of that, I had to do control arms. Im going to have spent $5000 by the time I'm done fixing all these things. Not what I call enjoyable... But, the LR4 gets me around where I need on job sites and adventure seeking weekends, so I love it. I just wish the prices on parts could be less and things lasted longer. But, then it wouldn't be a Land Rover.

Can anyone confirm the adaptations reset procedure for LR4? I am assuming I need to reset adaptations with my scan tool, then complete a procedure. I've seen several different procedures for the 6HP28. Some say to just accelerate to 6th gear, coast to stop, apply brakes for 15 seconds, repeat 5 times. I've also seen some BMW/Audi/VW procedures which involve manually selecting certain gears after accelerating to a set speed. What is the correct procedure and is this validated by LR?

I've noticed shifting seems to be slightly improved since the fluid and filter/pan service, but I'm still not experiencing what I'd call smooth shifts. The torque converter still seems to be slow locking up and I definitely hear the shudder still. Any ideas on what to try next? I've driven about 900 miles this past week so I'm not really thinking the shifts are going to get much better in their own. I also did the following with my iidtool: service>transmission>reset adaptations and then performed the 5 acceleration and coasting procedures, didn't really seem to do much.

Has the dealer looked at the vehicle?
Have you driven another LR4 with similar mileage, to compare?

Yeah I have driven even an LR3 with more miles and it's night and day smoother compared to my LR4. I haven't taken it to the land Rover dealership, just to the local LR specialist who thought the fluid might be the culprit... Can bad solenoids or valve block cause the converter to shudder? I'm not exactly sure how everything comes together with this transmission.

Just wanted to check in to see what ended up happening? I've got an '11 with 88K miles now and will do the pan & oil swap soon. What did your Indy charge you for the work?

Curious as I am having similar issues. Already did the fluid, pan, and filter swap to minimal improvement. Changed out lower control arm bushings with Polybush. Shudder actually seems a bit worse (assuming due to firmness of new bushings). On inspection, upper bushings also look to need update. Bearing assembly seems ok without any play.

Going to take a stab with upper bushings but if anyone has identified the cause and can save me a bit of work, I’d much appreciate any input! If bushings don’t fix this issue, next will do bearing assemblies (they are relatively inexpensive).
