I have an 06 lr3 and just received the message (amber symbol) & message 'suspension fault - normal height only'. I had been going down a paved incline at normal height. When I got home I turned it off and started up again and there was no warning and suspension raised and lowered several times w/ no problems.

I've read all of these posts. What are the 'codes' spoken about? Does this sound like my compressor is going bad or one of the other potential causes, i.e., brake switch or bulb, senser, etc.?

You really need to read the fault codes....For this you will need a code scanner or take it to an independant land rover repair facility. There are many reasons for a fault light to come on and unless you read the faults you could be replacing items that do not need to be replaced... Compressors seem to be pretty common between 40-60k miles on the earlier ones. (Mine went at 46k) I just replaced all four height sensors due to a fault for just one (I am at 64k now). There is also potential for a damaged wiring harness. Check your brake lights if they are all working that shouldn't be your problem.

I got the same message a few weeks ago. Took it to the dealer and they replaced the air compressor, barely still under warranty at 48K. If out of warranty I think it's $800-$1000 for a new one.

Thanks, yes, I have an appointment for later today for the diagnostic.
2 additional points if you know.

The dealer talks about having to recalibrate, whereas, in the directions on how to change it out, which I copied down from this site, the individuals that I've read have said nothing about the need for a recalibration. They say you replace, start the car & it takes care of itself.

Secondly, in that it is very apparent, from various sources, that these compressors must be crap, are the replacements more adequate? Have they fixed whatever the problem is that causes such an expensive repair after so little mileage? Or am I going to have to expect to replace this thing every 50k - 70k miles?

The sensors must be calibrated. If you even remove the sensor it needs to be recalibrated. Simply unplugging to check the wiring harness has no effect though. Despite what other people say, no two height sensors are the same. They also share data with other systems on the car. It is likely that at worst you will end up with other fault codes. If you have had it awhile and no changes to the rig I would be leary of the sensors just needing to be recalibrated. I would want to know the faults and then make a decision which way to go from there. As far as compressors are concerned. I would tell you to expect replacement every 50k or so. If the newest revisions really are better then you will be pleasantly surprised at the 100k mark if it is still work as it should!!

The dealer told me the new compressors they are putting in are much better than the original LR3 compressors. I believe they are the same one that are on the LR4's. He said he would be shocked if it goes out again in the next 50k.

I did recently replace the hood latch sensor and removed some fog lights from the front of the vehicle, (wiring is just detached). Would that do anything to cause some other sensor malfunctions? I mean, if they're all tied together.
Thanks so much for your responses!

I hope that's the case, I'll check into that.

The height sensors and yaw sensor need to be calibrated. The hood "sensor" is actually just a switch. (Hood is open or closed with no in between) My lastest suspension probablem had to do with the calibration of the yaw sensor after replacement of the electronic park brake module.
