Keep in mind, on high mileage runs with 7-10k intervals. You may be using some oil. In 10k I used about 1.5 quarts of synthetic.

I do every 5k miles. Coming up on 90k miles(next BIG service schedule). Differentials and transmission fluid change.. This is going to suck a huge gap out of my wallet. As for oil changes, I do them myself. Turn on some Stevie Ray Vaughn and get to work!

I bet that $100 quote is NOT synthetic.

In the price range, but why wouldn't they be printing what oil they use on your receipt.

Royal Purple Oil - 9.99 x 8 at local store
Royal Purple Filter RPM20-2009 x 13.95 online order (+ shipping)

Oil change labor price at my local Indy - 10.00

Total Price 103.87

After my local dealer quoted $150 for a synthetic change and multi point inspection [insert laugh here] I decided to get my hands dirty like the good old days. I've decided to run 4K using regular Castrol and a K&N oil filter from roverparts.com. I'm approaching 4K miles now under normal driving and the oil looks almost good as new.

Quick side note; Can the service light be reset manually or does the dealer have to hook up the computer?

Interesting. Any difficulties in pulling the oil filter? Does the K&N make a big difference?

You need a can bus computer device to reset the service interval. Alternatively I have popped by a dealer and had it reset, once they didn't even charge me when I was on the road.

The info I have indicates the Service Light can be reset by:

1. Holding down the trip rest button, continuing to hold the button down even after the trip mileage has been reset...
2. Turn the ignition key to the "II" position
3. Continue to hold the reset button until a new menu appears
4. When the new menu appears, let go of the button, then push it again until the "rst" option appears
5. Then press the reset button once more to reset the service light

Depends on the year. Early years have to have it done at the dealer or shop with a computer. Newer models, I think 08 on but could be 07 on, had this option put in.

I have yet to perform my second oil change pulling of the K&N filter but they do incorporate a tack welded 1" nut on the bottom of the filter housing so that should help out. With the little research I've done it looks like performance wise they rate up to 20 micron but some argue that partical retention is not as good as others such as Amsoil. I also like their internal bypass valve construction which is a lot more robust than cheaper brands like Fram. Again, I'm no expert but they seem to be good value for the money.
