I'm looking to add rails and ski/snowboard mounts to my 2012 LR4.

Anyone out there recommend how to go about this? It says you need the rails and the crossbar to mount anything on, but wouldn't the cross bars for the ski/snowboard mounts double for the OEM crossbars?

Either way I'd like to get an idea as far as OEM vs. aftermarket parts, as well as costs for parts and installation.

Thanks!

i look at adding roof bars too. not much out there and you still need the oem rails so you can mount the cross bars. I chose not to spend $1k on parts I will just need a couple of times. I do not like the look of the rails that you have to leave the roof. The cross bars can be removed easy but the rails require more work. good luck. have you thought about a hitch carrier for skis/snowboard?

Thanks,

I've looked at an option like this:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Land-Rover-...es&fits=Model:LR4&hash=item19df8f783b&vxp=mtr

Aftermarket Rails and Crossbars. I don't mind the look of them on. You could always get the shorter rails?

I saw the hitch carrier as well, not sure the most practical if you want to get stuff in and out of the back? Eventually I would like a roof rack option as well so for me the extended roof rails make sense.

Cheers,

J.

I just finished my roof rack project, and it was quite a journey. I initially orderd roof rails and cross bars from LR Centre Ltd over in the UK. About $620 to get them to my door, including shipping. I thought they were OEM when I ordered them. They were not. The quality was pretty good, but I wasn't in the mood to put non-OEM on my nice LR4, so I sold those on eBay. Took a pretty big hit at the end of the day, since I was only able to re-coup about $200 of the original cost.

If you buy knock-off stuff from eBay, be ready for some quality variances.

But speaking of eBay, that's where you can find some good LR dealers doing business. I picked up roof rails from Monte Rovers in Miami and cross-bars from Fort Meyers LR/Jaguar. I think they were a little cheaper than dealership list.

I found this video helpful for the install, even though mine are the short rails:

How to fit extended roof rack rail to Land Rover Discovery 3 & 4 ( LR3/LR4 ) - YouTube

If you do it yourself, get a plug puller like they use in the video, that helps alot. Also, practice cutting the trim a few times (practice on parts of the trim that you'll be throwing away). I found that WD-40 and an electric reciprocating hacksaw worked well.

Here's a pic without the ski carriers and bike carrier:

Thanks GoLoaf!

Yeah the more i look through the inventory online the more I think going OEM is the way to go. Unfortunately I don't have a garage (except a valet garage where I keep the car during the week). And I'm not sure I want to start doing an install while parked on the side of the street.. :) So I would likely get the parts myself and get a service place to do the install.

Your car looks great by the way, I was originally looking for that exact color. Thanks again for the advice - will roam ebay for OEM parts now.

Cheers,

J.

I have the same OEM setup as GoLoaf(except my rails and crossbars are black) and I've been very pleased with it. I think the OEM cross bars and rails really complement the LR4, as well as being functional and convenient.

I didn't know you could get the OEM cross bars in black! Bummer. I just bought a brand new set but they are the aluminum ones with black brackets.

Mine are the same as yours. I couldn't find them in all-black. Oh well, I'm not driving with them on, anyway (they are super simple to remove and put back on, if you're wondering). I prefer the look with the rails on, so I'm happy I went that route, and the crossbars, when I do put them on, will afford me some additional carrying capacity. At that point, silver or black isn't too big a deal.

Hi Goloaf,

Your setup looks good. What brand of bike holder is that you have?

Thanks,

Rob
